The language challenge: play a word game in another language
Think you know your French? Try unscrambling it. Unscramble Words 4U’s word games and solvers can use word lists in 21 languages, so you can practise vocabulary the fun way – against the clock, against the computer or against a friend.
Which languages?
The word games can use word lists in English, Catalan, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian and Welsh. The site’s pages and menus are translated into 15 of these languages, so learners can play with instructions in the language they’re studying, too.
How to take the challenge
- Open a game or solver that has a dictionary choice (they’re listed below).
- Choose the language you’re learning from the dictionary list.
- Play a round of hangman, unscramble a set of letters or find every anagram you can.
- Write down every word you didn’t know and look it up – that’s your vocabulary list for the week.
- Challenge a classmate, a friend or your teacher to beat your score in the same language.
Ideas for MFL teachers
- Starter: put seven letters on the board and give pairs three minutes to find words in the target language before checking with the solver.
- Hangman in the target language: pupils guess letters using the alphabet names in that language.
- Spelling with accents: look at how accented words are spelt in the word list, then test each other.
- Welsh and Irish: the word lists include Cymraeg and Gaeilge, handy for schools teaching either language.
- Exchange challenge: link up with a partner school learning English and swap word challenges.
A friendly word of advice
Word lists come from open-licence dictionaries, so they include rare and old-fashioned words as well as everyday ones. If a word looks unusual, check it in a learner’s dictionary before adding it to a vocabulary list.
