What to include in sub plans
Good sub plans include your schedule with times, a clear plan for each lesson and where the materials are, attendance and routines, emergency procedures, helpful staff, and something to do if there's extra time. A substitute should be able to teach the day without finding you.
- Daily sub plan (above): for planned absences.
- Emergency sub plans: any-day lessons for when you're unexpectedly out.
- Sub binder: the reference pages that stay the same all year.
Keep student information out of sub plans
Sub plans get left on desks and passed around. Instead of writing names, medical conditions or IEP details, say where the confidential information is kept ("health plans are in the red folder in the top drawer") and who to ask. What you type here stays in your browser only.
Frequently asked questions
What should be in a sub plan?
Your daily schedule, lesson plans with materials and where to find them, attendance and routines, emergency procedures, helpful staff and early finisher activities.
How detailed should sub plans be?
Detailed enough that someone who has never been in your room can follow them: step-by-step instructions, page numbers and where things are, but no more than a page or two per day.
Where should I keep sub plans?
In a clearly labeled folder on your desk and a copy in the office. Many teachers also keep an emergency folder that stays ready all year.
