Random Group Generator
Make random groups or teams in one click. Choose how many groups, or how many people per group, and the sizes are always balanced.
Names stay in this browser and are never sent anywhere. Use first names or numbers only.
How groups are balanced
The class list is shuffled fairly, then names are dealt into groups one at a time, like dealing cards. Group sizes never differ by more than one. For example, 25 students in groups of 4 gives one group of 5 and five groups of 4, rather than a lonely group of 1.
Ideas
- Turn on Team colors for games and quizzes.
- Copy the groups into your slides, or print them.
- Need seats too? The seating chart maker places groups on tables and can keep chosen students apart.
Private by design
Names you type are saved in your own browser on this device so they are there next time. They are never uploaded, and we can't see them. Use first names, initials or numbers if you prefer, and avoid anything more personal.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make random groups?
Add your class list, choose "a number of groups" or "groups of a size", enter the number and press Make groups. Press it again for a new mix.
What happens if the class doesn't divide evenly?
The extra students are spread across groups, so sizes never differ by more than one.
Can I keep two students apart?
In the seating chart maker, yes: list the pairs to keep apart and it avoids seating them together. The group generator is fully random.
