Classroom Noise Meter

Show the class how loud the room is with a friendly face and a meter. Set your own limit. The microphone is only used to measure loudness on this device.

The microphone is used only to measure loudness, on this device. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.

How it works

Press Start listening and allow the microphone when your browser asks. The meter shows the noise level from 0 to 100. Below 70% of your limit the face is green and calm; near the limit it turns amber; above it, red. A single cough or bang is ignored: the room has to be loud for a moment before it turns red.

Your privacy

The noise meter reads only the loudness of the microphone signal, on this device, many times a second. No sound is recorded, stored or sent anywhere, and nothing is analyzed for words. Press Stop and the microphone switches off.

Tips for a calmer room

  • Agree the limit with the class first: set it during a normal partner-talk level.
  • Show it during group work, not silent work: the goal is "productive buzz".
  • Keep the optional beep off unless the class asks for it; the color change is usually enough.

Frequently asked questions

Does the noise meter record sound?

No. It measures only how loud the room is, on your device. Nothing is recorded, saved or uploaded.

Why doesn't it show decibels?

Microphones in laptops and boards vary a lot, so a true decibel reading would be misleading. The 0 to 100 level and your own limit work the same way on any device.

The meter isn't moving. What should I do?

Check the browser allowed the microphone (look for the icon in the address bar), that the right microphone is selected in your computer's sound settings, and that the page is open over https.
