Long-term, medium-term and short-term planning

Long-term plans map what each year group learns across the year, usually subject by half term. Medium-term plans break a half term or unit into weeks, with objectives and key activities. Short-term plans are weekly or daily lesson plans.

Writing a medium-term plan

  • One row per week. Start with the learning objectives and the National Curriculum statements they cover.
  • Add key activities and how you'll assess, not a full lesson plan.
  • Leave the last week for consolidation and assessment.

Writing a long-term plan

  • List subjects down the side, then the topic or unit for each half term (Autumn 1 to Summer 2).
  • Check the year covers the full programme of study for each subject.
  • Look across subjects for sensible links, without forcing them.

Use the scheme of work template for lesson-by-lesson unit plans.

Questions teachers ask

What is a medium-term plan?

A plan for a half term or unit, usually set out week by week, showing learning objectives, curriculum links, key activities and assessment.

What is a long-term plan in school?

An overview of what is taught in each subject across the whole year, usually by half term. It is sometimes called a curriculum map.

How detailed should medium-term planning be?

Detailed enough to show the sequence and objectives for each week, but not a full lesson plan. Many schools use a single page per subject per half term.
