Privacy policy
Last updated: 20 October 2026
The short version
- Your lesson plans, class lists, seating charts and everything else you type are saved in your own browser on your device. They are never sent to us or anyone else. We can't see them.
- There are no accounts, no sign-ups and no database. We don't ask for your name or email address.
- The classroom noise meter measures only how loud the room is, on your device. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent.
- Please don't type pupils' personal details into any tool. Use first names, initials or numbers in class lists.
- Adverts from Google keep the site free. In the UK, the EU and Switzerland, Google only uses cookies for personalised ads if you say yes.
- Questions? Email info@lessonplanner.info.
Who we are
This website, lessonplanner.info ("Classfern – Lesson Planner"), is run by Mark Davies (47 Ravenswood Road, London SW12 9PN), an individual based in England, United Kingdom ("we", "us"). For data protection law we are the "controller" of the small amount of personal data described here. You can reach us at info@lessonplanner.info.
Who the site is for
Classfern – Lesson Planner is for teachers and other adults who plan lessons. It is not aimed at children. Teachers may show some classroom tools (such as the timer or name wheel) on a classroom screen, but children don't use accounts, type in information or interact with us.
What happens to what you type
Lesson plans, templates and teacher tools
Everything you type in the lesson plan maker, the printable templates and the teacher tools is saved in your browser's local storage on the device you are using. It is not uploaded. Word files, PDFs and printouts are created in your browser and saved to your device. "Copy for Google Docs" puts the plan on your clipboard; it only reaches Google if you paste it into a Google Doc yourself.
Class lists and classroom tools
Names you type into a class list (used by the wheel, name picker, group generator, seating chart maker and Class Screen) are saved in your browser only. They are never sent anywhere. We recommend first names, initials or numbers, and never anything more personal.
The classroom noise meter
When you press Start listening, your browser asks for permission to use the microphone. If you allow it, the page measures the loudness of the sound many times a second, on your device, to move the meter. The sound itself is not recorded, stored, analysed for words, or sent anywhere. Pressing Stop, or leaving the page, switches the microphone off.
Please don't enter pupils' personal details
Because plans stay on your device, we never receive pupil data. Even so, good practice (and most schools' data protection policies) is to keep identifiable details, special educational needs information and health information out of lesson plans and classroom tools. Describe groups and needs instead, and keep individual records in your school's secure systems.
Server logs
Like almost every website, our web host's servers keep standard logs when your browser asks for a page: your IP address, the browser and operating system your browser reports, the page asked for, the page you came from and the date and time. These are used to keep the site secure and to fix problems, not to identify you, and are deleted after a limited period set by our host.
Advertising
We show adverts from Google AdSense to pay for the site. Ads appear outside the tools and never in full-screen mode or on the Class Screen.
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and opt out of some other vendors' use of cookies at www.aboutads.info.
- Read how Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
The site is set up in AdSense as not directed at children, because its audience is teachers.
Your choice
If you visit from the UK, the European Economic Area or Switzerland, you are asked for consent before advertising cookies are used. You can accept or refuse; every tool works the same either way. If you don't agree to personalised ads, Google may still show non-personalised ads based on things like the page you are viewing and your rough location. Change your choice at any time with Privacy and cookie settings at the bottom of every page.
When an ad is shown, Google receives information such as your IP address, browser and device details, the page you are on and its cookie identifiers. See Google's privacy policy.
While the site is being set up it shows its own consent banner; once Google's certified consent message is live, it replaces ours. Our banner saves your answer in your browser's local storage as consent-interim.
If you email us
We receive your email address and whatever you write, and use it only to reply. We don't add you to a mailing list, and we delete emails once we no longer need them.
Our lawful bases
- Server logs and security: our legitimate interests in running a safe website.
- Personalised ads and advertising cookies: your consent, where the law requires it. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Non-personalised ads: our legitimate interests in funding a free website.
- Replying to emails: our legitimate interests in answering you.
- Plans, class lists and settings on your device: these never reach us, and the law allows websites to store what you ask them to store without separate consent.
Who else receives information
- Our web host (server logs).
- Google (adverts and the consent message).
- Our email provider, if you write to us.
We don't sell personal data and don't share it with anyone else unless the law requires us to. Google and our host may process data outside the UK, protected by recognised safeguards such as the UK–US data bridge or standard contractual clauses.
How long things are kept
- Everything in your browser: until you delete it or clear your browser data.
- Server logs: for a limited period set by our host.
- Google's cookies: usually up to 13 months (see the cookies page).
- Emails: only as long as needed.
Children
The site is for teachers and is not aimed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (in line with the US COPPA rules), or from children at all. Nothing typed into a tool reaches us. If you believe a child has emailed us personal information, tell us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 (and the EU GDPR if you are in the EU) you can ask for a copy of personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, ask us to limit or stop using it, object to our use of it, ask for it in a portable form, and withdraw consent at any time. Email info@lessonplanner.info; it's free and we will reply within one month. We hold very little, so we may find nothing that identifies you.
If you are unhappy, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk (0303 123 1113), or your local data protection authority in the EU. We'd be grateful for the chance to put things right first.
The law we follow
The UK GDPR, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), as amended by the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, and the EU GDPR for visitors in the EU.
How we go further
The law sets a minimum. We try to do better, and want to be open about how:
- No pupil data, by design. There is no account, form or database where pupil information could end up. Plans and class lists never leave your device.
- Reminders on every tool not to enter pupils' personal details, and to use first names or numbers in class lists.
- The microphone stays on your device. The noise meter measures loudness only, never records, and switches off when you stop.
- No adverts inside tools or in full screen, and none on the Class Screen, so nothing unexpected appears on a classroom display.
- No adverts are requested until you choose. While our own consent banner is in use, ad requests stay off until you press Accept.
- No analytics, no tracking pixels, no third-party fonts or code apart from Google's ad code. Our own code sets no cookies.
- Only our pages may use the microphone or go full screen; adverts and other sites' frames are blocked from asking. Other sites can't frame our pages.
- We check our claims whenever the site changes, and at least once a year.
Changes
If we change how the site uses data, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
