Practising for the Year 4 multiplication tables check
In England, the multiplication tables check (MTC) is a statutory on-screen check for Year 4 pupils in maintained schools, academies (including free schools) and special schools. According to the Department for Education's published guidance, pupils answer 25 timed questions on the multiplication tables up to 12, with 6 seconds to answer each question and a 3-second pause between questions in the standard version.
Press Check-style practice to practise in a similar format: 25 questions with 6 seconds each and a 3-second pause, using the 2 to 12 times tables. It is for practice only: this is not the official check, it is not connected to the Department for Education or the Standards and Testing Agency, and it does not predict a result. For the 2027 check dates, see the Year 4 maths TIP, and always check the official assessment and reporting arrangements and MTC administration guidance on GOV.UK for updates.
How to learn times tables
- Start with 2, 5 and 10. They follow easy patterns, and they help with the others.
- Then double up: the 4 times table is double the 2s, and the 8 times table is double the 4s.
- Use the 3s for the 6s and 9s: 6 × 7 is double 3 × 7.
- Flip facts round. 3 × 8 is the same as 8 × 3, so every fact you learn gives you two.
- Little and often: a few minutes a day works better than one long session. Use Practise these again to go over only the facts that were missed.
Using the test in class
- Show the test full screen and let the class answer on mini whiteboards while one pupil uses the keypad.
- Print a paper test for the whole class: the second page is the answer sheet.
- Start with no time limit, then move to 15, 10 and 6 seconds as pupils become fluent.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official multiplication tables check?
No. It is a free practice tool made by Classfern. The official check is run by schools through the Department for Education's own service. Our check-style option copies the published format so pupils can practise.
How many questions are in the multiplication tables check?
The Department for Education's guidance says the check has 25 timed questions on the tables up to 12, with 6 seconds to answer each one. Check GOV.UK for the latest guidance.
Can pupils use this on a tablet?
Yes. Use the on-screen keypad, or the number keyboard on a phone or tablet. Full screen makes the question bigger.
