Random Name Picker

Pick a student at random, fairly. With "no repeats" switched on, nobody is picked twice until everyone has had a turn.

Names stay in this browser and are never sent anywhere. Use first names or numbers only.

Why use a random name picker?

Random selection keeps everyone thinking, because anyone could be asked next. It also feels fair to students: the computer chose, not the teacher. "No repeats" makes sure every student is called on before anyone gets a second turn.

Tips

  • Ask the question first, give thinking time, then pick the name.
  • Let students "phone a friend" or pass once, so being picked never feels like a trap.
  • Use it for jobs, line leaders and who chooses the would you rather question.

Private by design

Names you type are saved in your own browser on this device so they are there next time. They are never uploaded, and we can't see them. Use first names, initials or numbers if you prefer, and avoid anything more personal.

Frequently asked questions

How does "no repeats" work?

Each picked name is set aside until everyone on the list has been picked once. Then press Start again to begin a new round.

Is the picker really random?

Yes. It uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator, so every remaining name has an equal chance.

What is the difference between the picker and the wheel?

Both pick fairly. The wheel is more of a show; the picker is quicker and shows the name in very large letters, which suits fast questioning.
