Why keep records?
Good records show what your child is learning and how they are getting on. They help you plan, they make it easy to look back over the year, and they are ready if your council asks how your child is being educated. Rules differ in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so check your council's guidance.
A simple routine
- Weekly: plan the week on the timetable and fill in the learning log.
- As you go: log a few pieces of work, books and trips.
- After each tutor session: the tutor adds a line to the tutor session log.
- Each term: update the progress record.
- End of year: write the year summary.
Plan lessons and check progress
The UK lesson plan template works for home lessons too. Our free practice tests can be taken at home at any time, and a dated result is a handy record of progress.

Questions teachers ask
What records should I keep for home education?
Many families keep a timetable or plan, examples of work, a reading log, notes on trips and activities, and a short summary of progress. Check your council's guidance for what it may ask about.
Do I have to follow the curriculum schools use?
Home-educating families don't have to follow it, but many use it as a guide for what to cover and when.
