Tip: empty boxes print as lines to write on, so you can also print this blank and fill it in by hand.

What goes in a sub binder?

A substitute binder holds the information that stays the same all year: your schedule, procedures, helpful staff, emergency procedures and seating chart, plus a page for the substitute's notes. Add each day's sub plan at the front.

Building your binder

  1. Use the tabs above to fill in each page. Everything saves in this browser.
  2. Press Print all pages, or download Word to edit further.
  3. Add a printed seating chart from the seating chart maker.
  4. Put it in a bright binder on your desk and tell the office where it is.

Keep student information out of sub plans

Sub plans get left on desks and passed around. Instead of writing names, medical conditions or IEP details, say where the confidential information is kept ("health plans are in the red folder in the top drawer") and who to ask. What you type here stays in your browser only.

Frequently asked questions

What should be in a substitute teacher binder?

A welcome letter, class schedule, classroom procedures, helpful staff, emergency procedures, a seating chart, where to find class lists and plans, and a page for the substitute's notes.

Should I include class lists and IEP information?

Say where they are kept rather than putting copies in the binder. Confidential information belongs in a secure folder or the school's system.

Can I print all the binder pages at once?

Yes. Press Print all pages, or download them all as one Word file.
