9-Letter Words
Nine-letter words are long enough to feel like an achievement, and they are the target in a classic jumbled-word conundrum. The word site lists 9,260 common examples, grouped by first letter.

What it does
Each letter group shows a selection of at most 40 high-frequency nine-letter words, each with its tile score. QUIZZICAL is the highest scorer, worth 38.
These words are ideal for three kinds of lesson. First, morphology: many are a root plus a suffix, such as agreement, attention, abilities and available, so pupils can see how endings like -ment, -tion and -able build longer words. Second, spelling variation: the A group contains both apologise and apologize, and the B group has behaviour, which shows that both the -ise and -ize endings are accepted in British English while American English prefers -ize and drops the u. Third, word puzzles: a nine-letter word jumbled up makes a satisfying conundrum, and the word site’s letters and numbers game includes a conundrum round built on exactly that idea.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Choose a letter heading and read its common nine-letter words and scores.
- Pick words that share a suffix, or that have a spelling variant, to build a focused word list.
- To check which nine-letter words a set of letters can make, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 9 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Before a conundrum round, warm up by finding common endings (-ing, -ment, -tion) among the scrambled letters.
- When marking, accept both -ise and -ize spellings if your school allows either, but encourage pupils to be consistent.
- Let pupils make their own scrambles from the list for classmates; writing an accurate jumble is good spelling practice in itself.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning

- KS3 (11–14)Investigate British and American spelling: compare apologise/apologize and behaviour/behavior, then search other lists for more pairs and suggest a rule.
- KS3 (11–14)Play conundrum rounds in the word site’s letters and numbers game on a 60-second clock, and keep a class leaderboard over a half term.
