10-Letter Words
Ten-letter words can look daunting, but most are built from smaller, predictable parts. The word site’s list of 7,505 common examples is a great resource for teaching pupils to break long words down.

What it does
The words are grouped by first letter, showing a selection of at most 40 high-frequency ten-letter words per letter, each with a tile score. EMBEZZLING scores highest, at 33 points.
Long words reward a “building blocks” approach. Many in the list contain Greek or Latin parts that turn up again and again: atmosphere (atmos + sphere), automobile (auto + mobile), biological and zoological (both ending in -logical, from the Greek for study). Others pair a root with a prefix and suffix, such as accumulate and accelerate, which share the tricky double c. There are also compound words (background, blackboard, afterwards, kingfisher) and both kilometres and kilometers, so the list supports root work, chunking and spelling-variant discussions.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Choose a letter heading and read its common ten-letter words and scores.
- Select words that share a root, prefix or suffix and group them together.
- To see which ten-letter words a set of letters makes, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 10 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Underline the part of the word that carries meaning, such as bio- (life) or -logy (study), to make spelling and meaning stick together.
- Watch out for doubled letters, which are the commonest errors in long words: accomplish, accumulate, appreciate.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning
- KS2 (7–11)Give Year 5–6 pupils a weekly “stretch word” from the list. They split it into syllables, find a smaller word hidden inside, and use it in a sentence.
- KS3 (11–14)Build a root wall in science: collect words with bio-, geo-, -logy or -sphere from the list and other sources, and add a meaning card for each part.
- KS3 (11–14)Play hangman with ten-letter words using “Computer guesses”: pupils think of a long word from the list, and see how few guesses the computer needs. They must mark every letter accurately.
- KS4 (14–16)Set a stretch spelling test of ten words that share a tricky feature (double letters, silent letters) and ask students to explain the pattern before they learn the words.
