What it does
The words are grouped by first letter, with a selection of at most 40 high-frequency words for each letter, and every word carries a tile score. QUIZZING tops the scores at 36 points.
Browse the A and B groups and two things stand out. First, compound words: anything, anywhere, backbone, backward, bathroom, birthday and bookshop all join two smaller words, which makes them easier to spell once pupils see the join. Second, useful academic vocabulary such as approach, accurate, although, analysis and boundary. The list also includes some American spellings, for example behavior, which is a good prompt for discussing why the same word can be spelled two ways.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Choose a letter heading to read its common eight-letter words and their scores.
- Pick out compound words or topic words to build a spelling or vocabulary list.
- To see which eight-letter words a particular set of letters makes, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 8 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Check how many syllables a long word has with the syllable counter before chunking it for spelling.
- Spot American spellings such as behavior and ask pupils to give the British form (the nine-letter list has behaviour).
- Turn a letter group into a quick dictation: read five words aloud in sentences, and pupils write only the target word.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning
- KS2 (7–11)Run a class spelling bee using eight-letter words you have chosen from the list. Contestants say the word, spell it, then say it again, and a wrong answer passes the word on.
- KS2 (7–11)Make a compound-word wall: pupils find compound words in one letter group, write each half on a separate card, and classmates match the pairs.
- KS3 (11–14)Choose ten academic words (approach, although, analysis, accurate…) and ask students to use each one correctly in a paragraph about a current topic.
- KS3 (11–14)Hold a “British or American?” sort using spellings found across the eight- and nine-letter lists, and discuss where the differences come from.
