The standards (our summaries)

Wyoming's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Mathematical Practices (MP)

  • 8.MP.1 Solve real problems with algebra and geometry and check and refine results.
  • 8.MP.2 Represent contexts with numbers and variables, reasoning in context and with symbols.
  • 8.MP.3 Build spoken or written arguments and critique others' reasoning.
  • 8.MP.4 Model situations with diagrams, tables, graphs and formulas and test whether results make sense.
  • 8.MP.5 Choose and use tools such as technology, models or estimation strategically.
  • 8.MP.6 Use precise terms, units and labels and give accurate answers.
  • 8.MP.7 Look for and use structure and patterns to simplify and solve problems.
  • 8.MP.8 Notice repeated reasoning, generalize patterns and check answers are reasonable.

The Number System (NS)

  • 8.NS.1 Understand irrational numbers and decimal expansions, and convert repeating decimals to fractions.
    • 8.NS.1a Compare rational and irrational numbers.
    • 8.NS.1b Know every real number has a decimal expansion. (being checked)
    • 8.NS.1c Model the hierarchy of real numbers: natural, whole, integer, rational and irrational.
    • 8.NS.1d Convert repeating decimals to fractions.

Expressions and Equations (EE)

  • 8.EE.5 Graph proportional relationships, read the unit rate as the slope and compare them.
  • 8.EE.7 Solve multi-step linear equations and inequalities in one variable.
    • 8.EE.7a Solve equations and inequalities using the distributive property, like terms and variables on both sides.
    • 8.EE.7b Decide whether a linear equation has one, infinitely many or no solutions.
  • 8.EE.8 Analyze and solve pairs of linear equations.
    • 8.EE.8a Interpret the solution of a system as where two graphs intersect.
    • 8.EE.8b Solve systems of two linear equations by graphing, with integer solutions.
    • 8.EE.8c Solve real problems that lead to two linear equations.

Functions (F)

  • 8.F.2 Compare two functions shown in different ways.
  • 8.F.4 Use linear functions in real and mathematical situations.
    • 8.F.4a Explain slope as the constant rate of change and the y-intercept as the value when x is zero.
    • 8.F.4b Find slope and y-intercept from points, tables, graphs, equations or descriptions.
    • 8.F.4c Build a slope-intercept function to model a linear relationship.
    • 8.F.4d Interpret slope and y-intercept in context.

Geometry (G)

  • 8.G.2 Identify congruence through rotations, reflections and translations and describe the sequence.
  • 8.G.5 Use informal arguments about triangle angles, parallel lines cut by a transversal and similarity.
  • 8.G.7 Use the Pythagorean theorem to find unknown side lengths.
  • 8.G.8 Use the Pythagorean theorem to find distances between points on a coordinate plane.

Statistics and Probability (SP)

  • 8.SP.3 Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems and interpret slope and intercept.
  • 8.SP.4 Use two-way tables and relative frequencies to show association in categorical data.
    • 8.SP.4a Build and interpret a two-way table for two categorical variables.
    • 8.SP.4b Use row or column relative frequencies to describe possible association.
