Get the Classfern app

Works in the UK and the US. The same free app for teachers, homeschooling parents and learners in both countries. · UK version of this page

Install Classfern on your desktop computer, laptop, Chromebook, tablet or phone. It’s free, you don’t need an account, and it opens in its own window like any other app – with the tools working even without the internet.

Install it on this device

Pick your device below for the steps.

How to install Classfern

Classfern is a web app: your browser installs it straight from this site, so there is no app store and nothing to download from anywhere else. Choose your device:

Google Chrome on Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook
  1. Open lessonplanner.info in Chrome.
  2. Click the install icon at the right of the address bar (a small screen with a down arrow). If you can’t see it, open the ⋮ menu and choose Cast, save and share › Install page as app (in older versions: Install Classfern…).
  3. Click Install. Classfern opens in its own window.
  4. Find it again in the Start menu (Windows), the Applications folder or Launchpad (Mac), or the launcher (Chromebook). On Windows you can right-click it and choose Pin to taskbar.
Microsoft Edge on Windows or Mac
  1. Open lessonplanner.info in Edge.
  2. Click the App available icon at the right of the address bar, or open the … menu and choose Apps › Install this site as an app.
  3. Click Install. Edge may offer to pin it to the taskbar and Start menu, or to put a shortcut on your desktop.
Safari on a Mac
  1. Open lessonplanner.info in Safari (Safari 17 or later, on macOS Sonoma or later).
  2. In the menu bar, choose File › Add to Dock.
  3. Click Add. Classfern appears in your Dock and in the Applications folder.

Older versions of Safari can’t install web apps: use Chrome or Microsoft Edge instead.

iPhone or iPad
  1. Open lessonplanner.info in Safari (or, on iOS 16.4 or later, in Chrome or Edge).
  2. Tap the Share button (a square with an arrow pointing up). In Chrome or Edge it is at the right of the address bar.
  3. Scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen, then tap Add.
  4. Open Classfern from its icon on your Home Screen.
Android phone or tablet
  1. Open lessonplanner.info in Chrome.
  2. Tap the ⋮ menu, then Install app (on some phones: Add to Home screen › Install).
  3. In Samsung Internet, tap the menu (☰), then Add page to › Home screen. In Firefox, tap ⋮ › Add to Home screen.
Firefox on a computer

Firefox on Windows, Mac and Linux doesn’t install web apps. Open this page in Chrome or Microsoft Edge to install Classfern – or simply bookmark it: everything on Classfern works in Firefox.

What works without the internet

When you install the app, it saves a copy of the lesson plan maker, the lesson plan templates and models, the early years and UK planning templates, the Class Screen and classroom tools, the teacher tools, the Year Planner, the trip and safety templates, sub plans and cover work, the teacher planners and the school report template. Pages you have opened recently also open again offline.

You need the internet for TIPs, practice tests, videos, Classfern Pro and pages you haven’t opened before. When you’re back online, the app updates itself and tells you when to refresh.

Free, with no account

The app is free and you don’t need to sign up. It is the same Classfern as the website: Classfern Pro members log in as usual.

Your privacy

Installing doesn’t send us anything about you. Nothing personal is stored on our servers: your lesson plans, class lists and settings stay in this browser on this device, exactly as on the website. On iPhone, iPad and Safari on a Mac, the app may keep its own storage, separate from the browser – if your plans don’t show in the app, use My plans › Download backup in the browser, then restore the file in the app. Read the privacy policy.

How to uninstall it

Uninstalling the app doesn’t delete the work saved in your browser. To clear that too, see what Classfern stores and how to clear it.
