The standards (our summaries)
Official North Carolina codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)
- Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems
- NC.6.RP.1 Use ratio language to describe multiplicative relationships and model them in several representations.
- NC.6.RP.2 Express ratios as equivalent unit ratios and interpret unit rates in context.
- NC.6.RP.3 Use ratio reasoning with tables, unit rates, conversions, and coordinate plots to solve problems.
- NC.6.RP.4 Solve percent problems using ratios per 100, benchmark percents, and finding the whole from a part.
The Number System (NS)
- Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by fractions
- NC.6.NS.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions using visual models and common denominators.
- Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples
- NC.6.NS.2 Divide fluently using long division with up to four-digit dividends and interpret remainders.
- NC.6.NS.3 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals fluently using standard algorithms.
- NC.6.NS.4 Use prime factorisation, greatest common factor, the distributive property, and least common multiple.
- Apply and extend previous understandings of numbers to the system of rational numbers
- NC.6.NS.5 Use rational numbers for opposite quantities in context and absolute value as distance from zero.
- NC.6.NS.6 Locate rational numbers on number lines and in the coordinate plane, including reflections across axes.
- NC.6.NS.7 Order rational numbers and interpret inequalities as positions on a number line.
- NC.6.NS.8 Graph points in all four quadrants and find distances using coordinates and absolute value.
- NC.6.NS.9 Add and subtract integers from −20 to 20 using zero pairs, number lines, and contexts.
Expressions and Equations (EE)
- Apply and extend previous understandings of arithmetic to algebraic expressions
- NC.6.EE.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents.
- NC.6.EE.2 Write, read, and evaluate algebraic expressions, naming their parts.
- NC.6.EE.3 Apply properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions without exponents.
- NC.6.EE.4 Identify equivalent expressions and justify the equivalence.
- Reason about and solve one-variable equations
- NC.6.EE.5 Use substitution to decide whether a number from a set makes an equation true.
- NC.6.EE.6 Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving problems.
- NC.6.EE.7 Solve real problems by writing and solving equations of the form x + p = q and px = q.
- Reason about one-variable inequalities
- NC.6.EE.8 Reason about inequalities of the form x > c or x < c, including substitution and number-line graphs.
- Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables
- NC.6.EE.9 Use variables for two quantities that change together and analyze them in words, equations, tables, and graphs.
Geometry (G)
- Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume
- NC.6.G.1 Find areas of triangles and polygons by composing and decomposing into rectangles and triangles.
- NC.6.G.2 Find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths.
- NC.6.G.3 Draw polygons in the coordinate plane from vertices and find side lengths.
- NC.6.G.4 Use nets of right prisms and pyramids to find surface area.
Statistics and Probability (SP)
- Develop understanding of statistical variability
- NC.6.SP.1 Recognize statistical questions that expect variability in the data.
- NC.6.SP.2 Describe a distribution by its center, spread, and overall shape.
- NC.6.SP.3 Consider both center and variability when describing numerical data.
- Summarize and describe distributions
- NC.6.SP.4 Display numerical data in dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
- NC.6.SP.5 Summarize numerical data in relation to its context, justifying the choice of center measure.
