  • Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems
  • NC.4.OA.3 Solve two-step whole-number word problems, estimating, interpreting remainders, and using letters for unknowns.
  • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples
  • NC.4.OA.4 Find factor pairs for numbers up to 50, identify multiples, and decide whether a number is prime or composite.
  • Generate and analyze patterns
  • NC.4.OA.5 Generate and analyze number or shape patterns that follow a given rule.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers
  • NC.4.NBT.1 Explain that each place is ten times the place to its right, for numbers up to 100,000.
  • NC.4.NBT.2 Read and write whole numbers up to 100,000 as numerals, number names, and expanded form.
  • NC.4.NBT.7 Compare multi-digit numbers up to 100,000 by place value using >, =, and <.
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic
  • NC.4.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers up to 100,000 using the standard algorithm.
  • NC.4.NBT.5 Multiply up to three digits by one digit and two digits by two digits using models and strategies.
  • NC.4.NBT.6 Find quotients and remainders with up to three-digit dividends and one-digit divisors.

Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)

  • Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering
  • NC.4.NF.1 Explain why fractions are equivalent using area and length models.
  • NC.4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using models, benchmarks, or common parts.
  • Build fractions from unit fractions
  • NC.4.NF.3 Break fractions into unit fractions and add and subtract like-denominator fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Use unit fractions to understand operations of fractions
  • NC.4.NF.4 Multiply a whole number by a fraction using unit fractions and solve related word problems.
  • Understand decimal notation for fractions and compare decimal fractions
  • NC.4.NF.6 Use decimal notation for tenths and hundredths and add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • NC.4.NF.7 Compare decimals to hundredths using models and symbols, for the same whole.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • Solve problems involving measurement and conversion
  • NC.4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of metric units, measure with them, and solve one-step metric word problems.
  • NC.4.MD.2 Convert metric measurements from larger to smaller units using place value and tables.
  • NC.4.MD.8 Solve addition and subtraction word problems with time intervals that cross the hour.
  • Solve problems involving area and perimeter
  • NC.4.MD.3 Find areas of rectilinear figures and solve problems with fixed area or fixed perimeter.
  • Represent and interpret data
  • NC.4.MD.4 Collect numerical data and show it in frequency tables, scaled bar graphs, or line plots.
  • Understand concepts of angle and measure angles
  • NC.4.MD.6 Understand angles as two rays from a common endpoint; measure, sketch, and find unknown angles.

Geometry (G)

  • Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes
  • NC.4.G.1 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • NC.4.G.2 Classify quadrilaterals and triangles by angles, side lengths, and parallel or perpendicular lines.
