The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 8

Number Sense (NS)

  • 8.NS.1 Know irrational numbers, give examples, write decimal expansions and convert repeating decimals to fractions.
  • 8.NS.2 Use rational approximations to compare irrational numbers, place them on a number line and estimate expressions.
  • 8.NS.3 Use exponent rules to write equivalent expressions with rational bases and whole-number exponents.
  • 8.NS.4 Solve real-world problems with rational numbers using several operations.

Algebra and Functions (AF)

  • 8.AF.1 Solve multi-step linear equations and inequalities with rational coefficients fluently and use them to model real situations.
  • 8.AF.2 Write linear equations in one variable with one, infinitely many or no solutions and justify which case applies.
  • 8.AF.3 Understand a function as a rule giving exactly one output for each input, with its graph as a set of ordered pairs.
  • 8.AF.4 Describe a relationship from its graph (increasing, decreasing, linear, extreme values) and sketch graphs from descriptions.
  • 8.AF.5 Understand y = mx + b as a linear function with a straight-line graph and compare linear and nonlinear functions in all forms.
  • 8.AF.6 Write a function for a linear relationship from a description, table or graph and interpret slope and y-intercept.
  • 8.AF.7 Compare two linear functions given in different forms, e.g. compare speeds from distance–time data.
  • 8.AF.8 Estimate the solution of a system of two linear equations by graphing and judge whether it is reasonable.

Geometry and Measurement (GM)

  • 8.GM.1 Explore dilations, translations, rotations and reflections of 2D figures on the coordinate plane.
  • 8.GM.2 Solve problems with the volume of cones, spheres and pyramids and the surface area of spheres.
  • 8.GM.3 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing side lengths of right triangles in 2D problems.

Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability (DSP)

  • 8.DSP.1 Make and interpret scatter plots of bivariate data, describing clusters, outliers and positive, negative, linear or nonlinear association.
  • 8.DSP.2 Write and use linear models to predict by interpolation and extrapolation and interpret slope and intercept.
  • 8.DSP.3 Show sample spaces and find probabilities of independent and dependent compound events with lists, tables and tree diagrams.
  • 8.DSP.4 Understand compound probability as favorable over total outcomes and use terms such as independent, dependent, complementary and mutually exclusive.
  • 8.DSP.5 Develop and use the multiplication counting principle for events with many outcomes.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
