Algebra I
Number Systems, Expressions, and Functions (NF)
- AI.NF.1 Simplify square roots of single-term algebraic expressions, including non-perfect-square radicands.
- AI.NF.2 Add, subtract and multiply polynomials and divide by monomials to write equivalent expressions, justified by properties.
- AI.NF.3 Extend independent and dependent variables to domain and range of relations given in tables, graphs, words and equations.
- AI.NF.4 Evaluate functions for given inputs and interpret statements in function notation in real contexts.
- AI.NF.5 Describe functions from key graph features (intercepts, increasing/decreasing, sign, extrema) and sketch graphs from descriptions.
Linear Equations, Inequalities, and Functions (L)
- AI.L.1 Write and solve one-variable linear equations and inequalities (rational coefficients, variables on both sides) for real situations; justify.
- AI.L.2 Move between graphs, tables and equations of lines (including from a point and slope) in slope-intercept, point-slope and standard form.
- AI.L.3 Model real-world linear relationships with equations, graphs and tables (with technology when useful) and interpret slope and intercepts.
- AI.L.4 Rearrange linear and quadratic equations and formulas to solve for a chosen variable.
Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities (SEI)
- AI.SEI.1 Model problems with two-variable linear inequalities, graph solutions as half-planes and interpret them.
- AI.SEI.2 Write and graph a system of two linear equations for a real problem, solve it graphically and algebraically and interpret the answer.
- AI.SEI.3 Model problems with a system of two linear inequalities, graph the overlapping half-planes and interpret the solution set.
Quadratic and Exponential Equations and Functions (QE)
- AI.QE.1 Tell linear (equal differences) from exponential (equal factors) change and compare them in tables, graphs and equations.
- AI.QE.2 Model problems with exponential functions y = ab^x in tables, graphs and equations and interpret a and b.
- AI.QE.3 Solve quadratic equations in one variable by inspection, square roots, factoring or the quadratic formula, choosing a fitting method.
- AI.QE.4 Model real situations with quadratic equations in one or two variables, solve with technology and judge whether answers make sense.
- AI.QE.5 Graph quadratic and exponential functions and identify and interpret key features such as zeros, axis of symmetry and extrema.
- AI.QE.6 Connect solutions, zeros, x-intercepts and factors of quadratics; know every quadratic has two complex roots, which may be non-real.
Data Analysis & Statistics (DS)
- AI.DS.1 Understand statistics as inference from random samples; tell surveys, experiments and observational studies apart and explain randomization.
- AI.DS.2 Recognize that data and statistics are not neutral; ask who benefits and how displays could mislead.
- AI.DS.3 Use technology to fit a linear model to bivariate data, interpret slope and intercept, and find and interpret the correlation coefficient.
- AI.DS.4 Summarize paired categorical data in two-way tables, interpret joint, marginal and conditional relative frequencies and spot associations.
Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)
Process Standards (PS)
- PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
- PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
- PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
- PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
- PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
- PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
- PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
- PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
