The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 7

Number Sense (NS)

  • 7.NS.1 Use a number line to show that opposites sum to zero and find and explain sums of rational numbers in real situations.
  • 7.NS.2 Show on a number line that the distance between two rational numbers is the absolute value of their difference; apply it.
  • 7.NS.3 Use the distributive property and other properties to justify sign rules for multiplication, such as (−1)(−1) = 1.
  • 7.NS.4 Explain that the negative sign of an integer fraction can sit on the numerator, denominator or whole fraction (nonzero denominator).
  • 7.NS.5 Write the prime factorization of whole numbers using exponents.
  • 7.NS.6 Understand squaring and square roots as inverse operations and find square roots of perfect squares.
  • 7.NS.7 Compute with rational numbers accurately and efficiently using a standard procedure.

Ratios and Proportional Reasoning (RP)

  • 7.RP.1 Identify the unit rate or constant of proportionality in tables, graphs, equations and verbal descriptions.
  • 7.RP.2 Use proportional reasoning to solve multi-step ratio and percent problems.
  • 7.RP.3 Represent real-world proportional relationships with equations and graphs and interpret the unit rate m in y = mx.

Algebra and Functions (AF)

  • 7.AF.1 Use properties of operations to write equivalent linear expressions (e.g. factoring out a common factor) and justify each step.
  • 7.AF.2 Solve real-world problems with rational numbers using one or two operations.
  • 7.AF.3 Solve equations of the form px + q = r and p(x + q) = r fluently and write and solve equations for real problems.
  • 7.AF.4 Solve inequalities of the form px + q > r or < r (including ≥, ≤), graph the solutions and interpret them in context.
  • 7.AF.5 Understand slope as rise over run and that a constant rate of change makes a function linear; classify rates as constant or not.
  • 7.AF.6 Graph a line from its slope and a point, and find the slope of a line from its graph.

Geometry and Measurement (GM)

  • 7.GM.1 Find actual lengths and areas from scale drawings and redraw figures at a different scale using proportions.
  • 7.GM.2 Use the formulas for circle area and circumference to solve problems and informally relate the two.
  • 7.GM.3 Solve problems about the volume of cylinders and of solids made from right rectangular prisms.

Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability (DSP)

  • 7.DSP.1 Understand that a representative random sample can give valid information about a population.
  • 7.DSP.2 Find and interpret mean, median, range, IQR and mean absolute deviation of random samples to compare two populations.
  • 7.DSP.3 Compare the overlap of two data sets in line plots or box plots and explain how outliers can change the mean or median.
  • 7.DSP.4 Understand probability as a number from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain) and describe events as likely or unlikely.
  • 7.DSP.5 Build probability models for simple equally likely events, predict relative frequencies and explain gaps from observed results.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
