What it does
Words are grouped by first letter, with a selection of at most 40 high-frequency words shown for each letter and a tile score beside every one. The top scorer is PIZZAZZ, worth 45, thanks to its three Zs.
Just in the A and B groups you will find words that pupils regularly misspell, including achieve, ancient, against, already, because, believe and brought. Achieve, ancient and bargain also feature on the Year 5–6 statutory spelling list in the English national curriculum. The list holds compound words too, such as bedroom and backlog, which are good for showing how two short words join. Seven is also the number of tiles a player holds in many tile word games, so using all seven letters at once is a popular challenge.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Pick a letter heading and read its common seven-letter words and scores.
- Note any words your class finds difficult, and add them to a personal spelling list.
- To find every word in seven letters you have, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 7 in its More options panel, or use the anagram solver.
More tips
- For anagram challenges, write a seven-letter word’s letters in a circle; seeing them out of line makes new words easier to spot.
- Ask pupils to split compound words into their parts before spelling them.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning
- KS2 (7–11)Choose five commonly misspelled seven-letter words from the list (such as because, believe, brought, between, already). Pupils use “look, say, cover, write, check” and invent a memory trick for each one.
- KS2 (7–11)Hold a “how many words?” race: write a seven-letter word from the list on the board and give pairs three minutes to make as many shorter words as possible from its letters. Check answers with the words-from-letters tool.
- KS3 (11–14)Find compound words in one letter group, split them into parts, then invent new compound words and argue whether they could ever become real.
- KS3 (11–14)Give scrambled seven-letter words as a starter; students unscramble them, then use each answer in a sentence linked to the lesson topic.
