4-Letter Words
Once children can read three-letter words, four-letter words are the natural next step: they bring in consonant blends, digraphs and the “magic e”. The word site’s list holds 2,273 common examples to draw on.

What it does
The page groups the site’s 2,273 common four-letter words by first letter. To keep it readable, each letter shows a selection of at most 40 high-frequency words rather than the whole set, and each word has a tile score beside it. JAZZ is the top scorer, worth 29.
For phonics, four letters is where spelling gets more interesting. Words such as frog, step and milk add a consonant blend to a simple pattern; ship, chin and that bring in digraphs, where two letters make one sound; and cake, bike and home show the split digraph, where a final e changes the vowel sound. Spotting these patterns in a real list helps children see that spelling has rules they can rely on, and a few exceptions to watch for.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Choose a letter heading; up to 40 common four-letter words starting with that letter are shown, each with its score.
- Read across a group looking for a particular pattern, such as words with “sh” or a final “e”.
- If you need four-letter words from specific letters, open the unscrambler and pick an exact length of 4 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Pair a three-letter word with its magic e partner (hop/hope, kit/kite, cut/cute) to make the vowel change obvious.
- Four-letter word ladders are a classic puzzle: try turning cold into warm one letter at a time.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning
- KS1 (5–7)Run a pattern hunt: give pairs one letter group and ask them to list every word containing a digraph (sh, ch, th) and every word ending in e.
- KS1 (5–7)Play “magic e” pairs: children read a three-letter word, add an e card to the end, and read the new word aloud, then check both in the lists.
- KS2 (7–11)Set a classic word ladder such as cold to warm, or head to tail. Pupils check each rung is a real word and compare who used the fewest steps.
- KS2 (7–11)Choose 12 four-letter words from the list for a quick word search made with the word search maker, as a calm spelling-practice activity.
