3-Letter Words
Three-letter words are where most children first learn to blend sounds. The word site lists 580 common ones, grouped by first letter, which makes it a handy bank for phonics, rhyme and early spelling games.

What it does
The page sets out all 580 words in the site’s common three-letter list under alphabetical headings, with the number of words in each group and a tile score after every word. FEZ is the top scorer at 15 points.
For teachers of young children, the real value is the huge number of consonant–vowel–consonant (CVC) words: cat, dog, big, sun, hop, red, wet. Because they follow the simplest spelling pattern, they are perfect for practising blending and segmenting. The list also contains plenty of words that break the pattern, like the, you, was and two, which are useful to point out as “tricky” words that can’t be sounded out in the usual way.

How to use it
- Open the list in a new tab.
- Jump to a letter heading to see every common three-letter word starting with it, plus how many there are.
- Use the score after each word if you are playing a tile game or setting a maths challenge.
- To find three-letter words from a particular set of letters, open the unscrambler and choose an exact length of 3 in its More options panel.
More tips
- Group CVC words by their middle vowel (bat, bed, bit, bog, bug) to practise short vowel sounds one at a time.
- Three-letter words make the easiest word ladders: change one letter at a time to get from cat to dog.
Ideas for the classroom and home learning
- Reception–KS1 (4–7)Pick CVC words from the list and use them for “robot talk”: say each sound separately (c-a-t) and ask children to blend it into a word, then swap roles.
- KS1 (5–7)Build rhyming families. Choose an ending such as -at or -ig, and challenge children to find every word in the list that rhymes, then write a silly sentence using three of them.
- KS2 (7–11)Set a word ladder challenge: get from hot to dog or pig to sty by changing one letter per step, checking each new word against the list. The word ladder tool can show a solution afterwards.
- KS2 (7–11)Use the tile scores for a maths starter: which three-letter word in the B group scores most? Can pupils find two words with the same total?
