The standards (our summaries)

Wisconsin's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

The Number System (8.NS)

  • M.8.NS.A.1 Know irrational numbers and that rational numbers have repeating decimals that can be written as fractions.
  • M.8.NS.A.2 Approximate irrational numbers with rational numbers to compare them, locate them on a number line and estimate.

Expressions and Equations (8.EE)

  • M.8.EE.A.1 Use properties of integer exponents to write equivalent numerical expressions.
  • M.8.EE.A.2 Use square and cube root symbols for solutions of x² = p and x³ = p and evaluate small roots.
  • M.8.EE.A.3 Estimate very large or very small amounts as a single digit times a power of ten and compare them.
  • M.8.EE.A.4 Use technology to compute with scientific notation and choose suitable units.
  • M.8.EE.B.5 Graph proportional relationships with the unit rate as slope and compare relationships shown in different ways.
  • M.8.EE.B.6 Use similar triangles to explain constant slope and derive y = mx and y = mx + b.
  • M.8.EE.C.7 Solve linear equations in one variable.
    • a. Find examples with one, none or infinitely many solutions.
    • b. Solve equations with rational coefficients, expanding and collecting terms.
  • M.8.EE.C.8 Analyze and solve systems of two linear equations.
    • a. Solutions are intersection points of the graphs.
    • b. Solve systems algebraically and estimate by graphing.
    • c. Solve real problems leading to two linear equations.

Functions (8.F)

  • M.8.F.A.1 Understand a function as a rule giving exactly one output for each input; its graph is the set of pairs.
  • M.8.F.A.2 Compare two functions represented in different ways.
  • M.8.F.A.3 Interpret y = mx + b as a linear function with a straight-line graph and give nonlinear examples.
  • M.8.F.B.4 Build a linear function from a description or two points, finding rate of change and initial value.
  • M.8.F.B.5 Describe a relationship qualitatively from its graph and sketch graphs from descriptions.

Geometry (8.G)

  • M.8.G.A.1 Verify by experiment the properties of rotations, reflections and translations.
    • a. Lines map to lines, segments to equal segments.
    • b. Angles keep their measure.
    • c. Parallel lines stay parallel.
  • M.8.G.A.2 Understand congruence as a sequence of rigid motions and describe such a sequence.
  • M.8.G.A.3 Use coordinates to describe how dilations, translations, rotations and reflections change 2D figures.
  • M.8.G.A.4 Understand similarity as rigid motions plus dilations and describe such a sequence.
  • M.8.G.A.5 Give informal arguments about triangle angle sums, exterior angles, transversals and angle-angle similarity.
  • M.8.G.B.6 Justify the Pythagorean relationship and its converse.
  • M.8.G.B.7 Use the Pythagorean Theorem to find unknown sides of right triangles in 2D and 3D problems.
  • M.8.G.B.8 Find the distance between two points on a coordinate grid with the Pythagorean Theorem.
  • M.8.G.C.9 Know how the volume formulas for cones, cylinders and spheres relate and use them to solve problems.

Statistics and Probability (8.SP)

  • M.8.SP.A.1 Make and interpret scatter plots of bivariate data, describing clusters, outliers and association.
  • M.8.SP.A.2 Know straight lines model linear association; fit a line informally and judge the fit.
  • M.8.SP.A.3 Use a linear model to solve problems and interpret slope and intercept.
  • M.8.SP.A.4 Use two-way tables of categorical data and relative frequencies to look for association.
