The standards (our summaries)

Wisconsin's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (4.OA)

  • M.4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (e.g. 35 is five times 7) and write comparison statements as equations.
  • M.4.OA.A.2 Solve multiplicative comparison word problems, telling them apart from additive comparison.
  • M.4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep word problems with the four operations, interpreting remainders and checking with estimation.
  • M.4.OA.B.4 Find factor pairs for numbers 1–100, recognize multiples and decide whether a number is prime or composite.
  • M.4.OA.C.5 Generate number or shape patterns from a rule and notice features the rule does not state.
  • M.4.OA.D.6 Multiply and divide within 100 flexibly and efficiently using relationships and properties.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (4.NBT)

  • M.4.NBT.A.1 Recognize that a digit is worth ten times as much as the same digit one place to the right.
  • M.4.NBT.A.2 Read, write and compare multi-digit whole numbers in numerals, words and expanded form.
  • M.4.NBT.A.3 Use place value to estimate with multi-digit whole numbers in real situations and judge reasonableness.
  • M.4.NBT.B.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers flexibly and efficiently using strategies or algorithms.
  • M.4.NBT.B.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits, explaining with equations, arrays or area models.
  • M.4.NBT.B.6 Divide up to four-digit dividends by one-digit divisors with remainders, explaining with models.

Number and Operations—Fractions (4.NF)

  • M.4.NF.A.1 Understand fraction equivalence.
    • a. Explain equivalence with visual fraction models.
    • b. Generate equivalent fractions.
  • M.4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators referring to the same whole and justify with models.
  • M.4.NF.B.3 Understand composing and decomposing fractions.
    • a. See adding and subtracting fractions as joining and separating parts.
    • b. Split a fraction into unit fractions or other same-denominator parts in more than one way.
    • c. Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
    • d. Solve word problems with like-denominator fractions.
  • M.4.NF.B.4 Extend multiplication to multiply a whole number by a fraction.
    • a. See a fraction as a multiple of a unit fraction.
    • b. Multiply a whole number by a fraction using that idea.
    • c. Solve word problems multiplying a whole number by a fraction.
  • M.4.NF.C.5 Write tenths as hundredths to add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • M.4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominators 10 or 100 as decimals, connect them to real contexts and show them with models.
  • M.4.NF.C.7 Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size and benchmarks, referring to the same whole.

Measurement and Data (4.MD)

  • M.4.MD.A.1 Know relative sizes of units in one system and express larger units in terms of smaller ones in a table.
  • M.4.MD.A.2 Solve word problems with distance, time, volume, mass and money, including simple fractions or decimals.
  • M.4.MD.A.3 Apply rectangle area and perimeter formulas to real and mathematical problems.
  • M.4.MD.B.4 Make line plots of measurements in halves, fourths and eighths and solve fraction problems with them.
  • M.4.MD.C.5 Recognize angles as two rays with a shared endpoint and understand angle measurement.
    • a. Angle measure relates to the arc of a circle.
    • b. An angle made of n one-degree angles measures n degrees.
  • M.4.MD.C.6 Measure angles in whole degrees with a protractor and sketch angles of a given measure.
  • M.4.MD.C.7 Understand angle measure as additive and find unknown angles with addition or subtraction.

Geometry (4.G)

  • M.4.G.A.1 Draw points, lines, segments, rays, angles and parallel and perpendicular lines and find them in figures.
  • M.4.G.A.2 Classify 2D figures by parallel or perpendicular lines and angle types; recognize right triangles.
  • M.4.G.A.3 Recognize lines of symmetry, identify line-symmetric figures and draw their lines of symmetry.
