The standards (our summaries)

Wisconsin's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (3.OA)

  • M.3.OA.A.1 Interpret a product such as 5 × 7 as the total in 5 groups of 7 and describe matching situations.
  • M.3.OA.A.2 Interpret a quotient such as 56 ÷ 8 as the size of each share or the number of shares.
  • M.3.OA.A.3 Solve word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measurement using multiplication and division.
  • M.3.OA.B.4 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties as strategies to multiply and divide.
  • M.3.OA.B.5 Understand division as finding an unknown factor, e.g. 32 ÷ 8 by asking what times 8 makes 32.
  • M.3.OA.C.6 Multiply and divide within 100 using multiplicative thinking.
    • a. Use operation meanings, relationships and properties to build strategies.
    • b. Use strategies flexibly and efficiently, including facts with 0, 1, 2, 5 and 10.
  • M.3.OA.D.7 Solve two-step word problems with the four operations, writing equations with a letter for the unknown and checking by estimation.
  • M.3.OA.D.8 Find patterns in addition and multiplication tables and explain them with properties of operations.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT)

  • M.3.NBT.A.1 Use place value to estimate in real situations within 1,000 (mental math, benchmarks, rounding) and judge reasonableness.
  • M.3.NBT.A.2 Add and subtract within 1,000 flexibly and efficiently using place value and properties.
  • M.3.NBT.A.3 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 using place value and properties.

Number and Operations—Fractions (3.NF)

  • M.3.NF.A.1 Understand a unit fraction as one of the equal parts of a whole and other fractions as made of unit fractions.
  • M.3.NF.A.2 Understand a fraction as a number and show it on a number line.
    • a. The whole is the interval from 0 to 1, split into equal parts.
    • b. Mark fractions by repeating unit-fraction lengths from 0.
  • M.3.NF.A.3 Explain when fractions are equivalent and compare fractions by thinking about their size.
    • a. Equivalent fractions are the same size or point.
    • b. Find simple equivalent fractions and explain with models.
    • c. Write whole numbers as fractions and spot fractions equal to wholes.
    • d. Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator; justify.

Measurement and Data (3.MD)

  • M.3.MD.A.1 Tell time to the nearest minute and solve elapsed-time problems in minutes, e.g. on a number line.
  • M.3.MD.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step problems.
  • M.3.MD.B.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and use them to answer how-many-more and how-many-fewer questions.
  • M.3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to half and quarter inches and show the data on a line plot.
  • M.3.MD.C.5 Understand area as an attribute of flat shapes, measured by covering with unit squares.
  • M.3.MD.C.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares in square cm, m, in, ft or improvised units.
  • M.3.MD.C.7 Relate area to multiplication and addition.
    • a. Tile a rectangle and show area equals side lengths multiplied.
    • b. Multiply side lengths to find rectangle areas in problems.
    • c. Use tiling to model the distributive property.
    • d. Find areas of composite rectilinear figures by adding rectangles.
  • M.3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems, including unknown sides and rectangles with equal perimeter but different area.

Geometry (3.G)

  • M.3.G.A.1 Understand that shapes in different categories can share attributes; recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares as quadrilaterals.
  • M.3.G.A.2 Divide shapes into equal-area parts and name each part's area as a unit fraction.
