The standards (our summaries)

Ohio's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (4.OA)

  • 4.OA.1 Interpret multiplication equations as comparisons and write verbal comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.2 Solve multiplicative comparison word problems with drawings and equations with an unknown.
  • 4.OA.3 Solve multistep word problems with the four operations, interpret remainders and check answers by estimating.
  • 4.OA.4 Find factor pairs and multiples and decide whether numbers 1–100 are prime or composite.
  • 4.OA.5 Make number or shape patterns from a rule and describe features the rule does not state.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (4.NBT)

  • 4.NBT.1 Recognize that a digit in one place is worth ten times what it is worth in the place to its right.
  • 4.NBT.2 Read, write and compare whole numbers to one million in standard, word and expanded form.
  • 4.NBT.3 Round whole numbers to one million to any place using place value.
  • 4.NBT.4 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.5 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits; explain with equations, arrays or area models.
  • 4.NBT.6 Divide up to four-digit dividends by one-digit divisors with remainders and explain with models.

Number and Operations—Fractions (4.NF)

  • 4.NF.1 Use visual models to explain why multiplying numerator and denominator by n gives an equivalent fraction.
  • 4.NF.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators, benchmarks or models; justify.
  • 4.NF.3 Understand a/b with a > 1 as a sum of unit fractions and add and subtract like-denominator fractions.
    • a. See adding and subtracting fractions as joining and separating parts of one whole.
    • b. Decompose a fraction into same-denominator sums in more than one way.
    • c. Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators.
    • d. Solve word problems with like-denominator fractions using models and equations.
  • 4.NF.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number using understanding of unit fractions.
    • a. Understand a/b as a multiple of 1/b, shown with models.
    • b. Find whole number times fraction as a multiple of a unit fraction.
    • c. Solve whole-number-times-fraction word problems with models and equations.
  • 4.NF.5 Express tenths as hundredths to add fractions with denominators 10 and 100.
  • 4.NF.6 Write tenths and hundredths as decimals and place them on a number line.
  • 4.NF.7 Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size and justify with a visual model.

Measurement and Data (4.MD)

  • 4.MD.1 Know relative sizes of metric units in one system and convert larger units to smaller in a two-column table.
  • 4.MD.2 Solve real-world problems with money, time and metric measures.
    • a. Add and subtract money with models and write amounts as decimals.
    • b. Add and subtract time intervals in hours and minutes with number lines or clocks.
    • c. Solve metric distance, liquid volume and mass problems with whole-number operations.
  • 4.MD.3 Use area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real problems, including finding an unknown side.
  • 4.MD.4 Make and interpret pictographs, bar graphs and line plots to answer questions about data.
  • 4.MD.5 Understand angles as two rays sharing an endpoint and understand how angles are measured.
    • a. Angle measure relates to the fraction of a circle's arc.
    • b. An angle made of n one-degree angles measures n degrees.
  • 4.MD.6 Measure whole-degree angles with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
  • 4.MD.7 Understand angle measure as additive and solve for unknown angles with addition or subtraction equations.

Geometry (4.G)

  • 4.G.1 Draw points, lines, segments, rays, angles and parallel and perpendicular lines and find them in figures.
  • 4.G.2 Classify 2D shapes by parallel or perpendicular sides and by angles of a given size.
