The standards (our summaries)

Ohio's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (3.OA)

  • 3.OA.1 Interpret products of whole numbers as the total in equal groups, e.g. 5 groups of 7.
  • 3.OA.2 Interpret whole-number division as equal sharing or as making groups of a given size.
  • 3.OA.3 Solve multiplication and division word problems within 100 with drawings and equations.
  • 3.OA.4 Find the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation with three numbers.
  • 3.OA.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties as strategies to multiply and divide.
  • 3.OA.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem, e.g. what times 8 makes 32.
  • 3.OA.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently and know all products of one-digit numbers from memory.
  • 3.OA.8 Solve two-step word problems with the four operations, writing equations and checking with estimation.
  • 3.OA.9 Find patterns in addition and multiplication tables and explain them using properties.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT)

  • 3.NBT.1 Round whole numbers to the nearest 10 or 100 using place value.
  • 3.NBT.2 Add and subtract within 1,000 fluently using place value, properties and the inverse relationship.
  • 3.NBT.3 Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 using place value and properties.

Number and Operations—Fractions (3.NF)

  • 3.NF.1 Understand 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a parts of size 1/b.
  • 3.NF.2 Understand a fraction as a number and place it on a number line.
    • a. Locate 1/b by splitting 0 to 1 into b equal parts.
    • b. Locate a/b by marking off a lengths of 1/b from 0.
  • 3.NF.3 Explain equivalence of fractions in special cases and compare fractions by reasoning about size.
    • a. Understand equal fractions as the same size or the same point.
    • b. Find simple equivalent fractions and explain with visual models.
    • c. Write whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions equal to whole numbers.
    • d. Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator and justify.

Measurement and Data (3.MD)

  • 3.MD.1 Work with time and money.
    • a. Tell time to the minute and solve elapsed-time problems within 90 minutes.
    • b. Add and subtract money, keeping dollars and cents separate.
  • 3.MD.2 Estimate and measure liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step problems.
  • 3.MD.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and solve two-step how-many-more and how-many-less problems.
  • 3.MD.4 Measure lengths to half or quarter inches and show the data on a line plot.
  • 3.MD.5 Understand area as an attribute of plane figures measured with unit squares.
    • a. A unit square has one square unit of area.
    • b. A figure covered by n unit squares has area n square units.
  • 3.MD.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares (sq cm, sq m, sq in, sq ft or improvised units).
  • 3.MD.7 Relate area to multiplication and addition.
    • a. Tile a rectangle and show area equals side lengths multiplied.
    • b. Multiply side lengths to find rectangle areas in problems.
    • c. Use tiling to show the distributive property with areas.
    • d. Find areas of composite figures by splitting into rectangles and adding.
  • 3.MD.8 Solve perimeter problems, including unknown side lengths and rectangles with the same perimeter or area.

Geometry (3.G)

  • 3.G.1 Draw and classify triangles, quadrilaterals and other polygons by number of sides and right angles.
  • 3.G.2 Split shapes into parts of equal area and name each part's area as a unit fraction of the whole.
