The standards (our summaries)

Massachusetts's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (2.OA)

  • 2.OA.A.1 Solve one- and two-step add/subtract word problems within 100, using pictures and equations with a box or letter for the unknown.
  • 2.OA.B.2 Add and subtract within 20 fluently; know sums of two one-digit numbers and the related differences from memory.
  • 2.OA.C.3 Say whether up to 20 objects make an odd or even number; show even numbers as a double (e.g. 8 = 4 + 4).
  • 2.OA.C.4 Use addition to find the total in rectangular arrays up to 5 by 5 and write an equation of equal addends.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (2.NBT)

  • 2.NBT.A.1 Know a three-digit number is made of hundreds, tens and ones.
    • a. A bundle of ten tens is called a "hundred".
    • b. 100, 200, … 900 are one to nine hundreds with no tens or ones.
  • 2.NBT.A.2 Count within 1000, count in steps of 5, 10 and 100, and spot step-counting patterns from any start.
  • 2.NBT.A.3 Read and write numbers to 1000 as numerals, number names and in expanded form.
  • 2.NBT.A.4 Compare two three-digit numbers by hundreds, tens and ones digits, recording with >, = and <.
  • 2.NBT.B.5 Add and subtract within 100 accurately and efficiently using place value, properties and the link between addition and subtraction.
  • 2.NBT.B.6 Add as many as four two-digit numbers, using place value and properties of operations.
  • 2.NBT.B.7 Add and subtract within 1000 with models, drawings and strategies, linked to a written method, including composing and decomposing tens or hundreds.
  • 2.NBT.B.8 Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to or from a number between 100 and 900.
  • 2.NBT.B.9 Give reasons why add and subtract strategies work, using place value and operation properties.

Measurement and Data (2.MD)

  • 2.MD.A.1 Choose a suitable tool (ruler, yardstick, meter stick, tape) and measure length.
  • 2.MD.A.2 Measure one length in two different units and explain how the unit size changes the number.
  • 2.MD.A.3 Estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
  • 2.MD.A.4 Measure two objects and say by how many standard units one is longer.
  • 2.MD.B.5 Solve add/subtract word problems within 100 about lengths in the same unit.
  • 2.MD.B.6 Represent whole numbers as equally spaced points on a number line starting at 0 and use it to add and subtract within 100.
  • 2.MD.C.7 Read and write clock times to the nearest 5 minutes, with a.m. and p.m.
    • a. Know how units of time relate (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years).
  • 2.MD.C.8 Solve money word problems up to $10 (whole dollars or cents) using $ and ¢; no decimal notation expected.
  • 2.MD.D.9 Measure lengths to the nearest whole unit and show the measurements on a dot plot (line plot).
  • 2.MD.D.10 Draw picture and bar graphs for up to four categories and solve problems using them.

Geometry (2.G)

  • 2.G.A.1 Recognize and draw shapes with given attributes such as number of angles; identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
  • 2.G.A.2 Split a rectangle into rows and columns of equal squares and count them to find the total.
  • 2.G.A.3 Cut circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal parts (halves, thirds, fourths); equal parts can look different.
