The standards (our summaries)
Massachusetts's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (3.OA)
- 3.OA.A.1 Interpret a product such as 5 × 7 as the total in 5 groups of 7 objects.
- 3.OA.A.2 Interpret a whole-number quotient as the size of each share or as the number of equal groups.
- 3.OA.A.3 Solve word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measures by multiplying or dividing.
- 3.OA.A.4 Work out the missing whole number in a three-number multiplication or division equation, e.g. 8 × ? = 48.
- 3.OA.B.5 Use properties of multiplication, including the identity property of 1, as strategies (names not required).
- 3.OA.B.6 Understand division as an unknown-factor problem, e.g. 32 ÷ 8 as "what times 8 makes 32?".
- 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently; know products of one-digit numbers and related division facts from memory.
- 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step whole-number word problems with the four operations, with a letter for the unknown; check reasonableness.
- 3.OA.D.9 Find patterns in arithmetic, including in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them with properties of operations.
Number and Operations in Base Ten (3.NBT)
Number and Operations—Fractions (3.NF)
- 3.NF.A.1 Understand a unit fraction 1/b as one part when a single unit is split into b equal parts (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8).
- 3.NF.A.2 See fractions as numbers with their own place on a number line.
- 3.NF.A.3 Explain simple cases of equal fractions and compare fractions by thinking about their size.
- a. Two fractions are equivalent if they are the same size or at the same point on a number line.
- b. Recognize and make simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equal using models.
- c. Write whole numbers as fractions and recognize fractions equal to whole numbers.
- d. Compare two fractions that share a numerator or a denominator and record with >, = or <.
Measurement and Data (3.MD)
- 3.MD.A.1 Tell and write time to the minute and solve word problems about time intervals.
- 3.MD.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses in standard metric units and solve one-step problems.
- 3.MD.B.3 Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and solve "how many more/less" problems with them.
- 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to half and quarter inches and show the measurements on a dot plot.
- 3.MD.C.5 Recognize area as an attribute of flat shapes and understand area measurement.
- 3.MD.C.6 Find areas by counting unit squares, in standard (square cm, m, in, ft) or non-standard units.
- 3.MD.C.7 Relate area to multiplication and addition.
- 3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems, including unknown sides, and compare rectangles with equal perimeters or areas.
