The standards (our summaries)
Massachusetts's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (1.OA)
- 1.OA.A.1 Solve add/subtract word problems within 20 of all types, using objects, drawings and equations or number sentences.
- 1.OA.A.2 Solve word problems that add three whole numbers with a total of 20 or less.
- 1.OA.B.3 Use properties of addition, including the identity property of zero, as strategies (names not required).
- 1.OA.B.4 Think of subtraction as finding a missing addend, e.g. 10 − 8 as "what plus 8 makes 10?".
- 1.OA.C.5 Connect counting with adding and subtracting, e.g. count on two to add two.
- 1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20 accurately and efficiently, fluently within 10, using strategies such as making ten.
- 1.OA.D.7 Understand the equal sign and decide if addition and subtraction equations are true or false.
- 1.OA.D.8 Work out the missing whole number in a three-number addition or subtraction equation, e.g. 8 + ? = 11.
Number and Operations in Base Ten (1.NBT)
- 1.NBT.A.1 Count to 120 from any number below 120; read, write and record object counts with numerals.
- 1.NBT.B.2 Know a two-digit number is made of tens and ones.
- 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two-digit numbers by their tens and ones digits, recording with >, = and <.
- 1.NBT.C.4 Add within 100 (two-digit + one-digit, two-digit + multiple of 10) with models or place-value strategies and explain the method.
- 1.NBT.C.5 Find 10 more or 10 less than a two-digit number mentally, explain why, and spot the place-value pattern.
- 1.NBT.C.6 Take a multiple of 10 away from another multiple of 10 (both 10–90, answer not negative) and explain the reasoning.
Measurement and Data (1.MD)
- 1.MD.A.1 Order three objects by length and compare two lengths using a third object.
- 1.MD.A.2 Give a length as a whole number of same-size units laid end to end with no gaps or overlaps.
- 1.MD.B.3 Read and write clock times to the hour and half hour, analog and digital.
- 1.MD.C.4 Sort, display and read data in up to three groups; answer questions about totals and differences.
- 1.MD.D.5 Know the values of U.S. coins, find equal amounts and solve problems up to 100¢.
Geometry (1.G)
- 1.G.A.1 Tell defining attributes of shapes from non-defining ones (color, size, orientation); build and draw shapes with given attributes.
- 1.G.A.2 Put 2D or 3D shapes together to make composite shapes and build new shapes from them.
- 1.G.A.3 Split circles and rectangles into two or four equal shares named halves, fourths or quarters; more shares means smaller shares.
