The standards (our summaries)
Iowa's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Ratios and Proportional Relationships (RP)
- 6.RP.A.1 Understand ratios and use ratio language to describe how two quantities relate.
- 6.RP.A.2 Understand the unit rate a/b for a ratio a:b (b not 0) and use rate language in context.
- 6.RP.A.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning with tables, tape diagrams, double number lines or equations (a–d: ratio tables, unit rates, percents, unit conversion).
The Number System (NS)
- 6.NS.A.1 Use models to divide fractions by fractions and solve word problems about it.
- 6.NS.B.2 Divide multi-digit numbers with the standard algorithm, at least four digits by one digit by hand.
- 6.NS.B.3 Use standard algorithms for all four operations with multi-digit decimals, with technology for harder cases.
- 6.NS.B.4 Find the GCF of two numbers up to 100 and the LCM of two numbers up to 12, and factor sums using the distributive property.
- 6.NS.C.5 Use positive and negative numbers for opposite quantities in real contexts, explaining what zero means.
- 6.NS.C.6 Show rational numbers as points on number lines and coordinate planes, including negative coordinates (a–c).
- 6.NS.C.7 Compare and order rational numbers and describe absolute value (a–d: inequalities on number lines, order in context, absolute value).
- 6.NS.C.8 Solve problems by graphing points in all four quadrants, using coordinates and absolute value to find distances.
Expressions and Equations (EE)
- 6.EE.A.1 Write and evaluate numerical expressions with whole-number exponents.
- 6.EE.A.2 Write, read and evaluate expressions that use letters as numbers (a–c).
- 6.EE.A.3 Use properties of operations to make equivalent expressions.
- 6.EE.A.4 Describe the properties of operations that show two expressions are equivalent.
- 6.EE.B.5 Use substitution to decide whether a number from a set makes an equation or inequality true.
- 6.EE.B.6 Use variables for numbers and write expressions to solve problems, a variable standing for an unknown or any number in a set.
- 6.EE.B.7 Solve problems by writing and solving x + p = q and px = q with nonnegative rational numbers.
- 6.EE.B.8 Write x > c or x < c for a constraint, know it has infinitely many solutions and show them on a number line.
- 6.EE.C.9 Use variables for two quantities that change together, write an equation and relate it to graphs and tables.
Geometry (G)
- 6.G.A.1 Find areas of triangles, special quadrilaterals and polygons by combining into rectangles or splitting into triangles.
- 6.G.A.2 Find the volume of rectangular prisms with fraction edges by packing small cubes and with V = lwh or V = Bh.
- 6.G.A.3 Draw polygons from vertex coordinates and find side lengths between points sharing a coordinate.
- 6.G.A.4 Use nets of rectangles and triangles to show 3D figures and find their surface area.
Statistics and Probability (SP)
- 6.SP.A.1 Recognize a statistical question as one that expects variability in the answers.
- 6.SP.A.2 Understand that data for a statistical question have a distribution described by center, spread and shape.
- 6.SP.A.3 Know a measure of center and a measure of variation each sum up data in one number.
- 6.SP.B.4 Show numerical data in dot plots, histograms and box plots.
- 6.SP.B.5 Summarize data in context (a–d: count, attribute and units, center and variability, link to shape).
