The standards (our summaries)
Iowa's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)
- 5.OA.A.1 Evaluate expressions that use parentheses, brackets or braces, with whole numbers and fractions.
- 5.OA.A.2 Write simple expressions for calculations and interpret expressions without working them out.
- 5.OA.B.3 Make two number patterns from two rules, spot links between matching terms and graph the pairs on a coordinate plane.
Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)
- 5.NBT.A.1 Know a digit is worth ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left.
- 5.NBT.A.2 Explain zero patterns and decimal-point shifts when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10, using whole-number exponents.
- 5.NBT.A.3 Read, write and compare decimals to thousandths (a: numerals, words and expanded form; b: compare using place value and >, =, <).
- 5.NBT.A.4 Round decimals to any place using place value.
- 5.NBT.B.5 Multiply multi-digit whole numbers fluently with an algorithm such as the standard algorithm, partial products or an area model.
- 5.NBT.B.6 Divide up to four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors using place-value strategies and the standard algorithm, shown with models.
- 5.NBT.B.7 Do all four operations with decimals to hundredths, explaining with models, drawings and place value.
Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)
- 5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators by rewriting them with like denominators.
- 5.NF.A.2 Solve word problems adding and subtracting fractions of the same whole and use benchmark fractions to check answers.
- 5.NF.B.3 Interpret a fraction as numerator divided by denominator and solve division word problems with fraction or mixed-number answers.
- 5.NF.B.4 Multiply fractions and whole numbers by fractions (a: parts of a partition; b: rectangle area with fraction sides); no mixed numbers.
- 5.NF.B.5 Interpret multiplication as scaling (a: compare product and factor sizes without multiplying; b: explain effects of factors above or below 1).
- 5.NF.B.6 Solve real problems multiplying fractions and mixed numbers, e.g. with models or equations.
- 5.NF.B.7 Divide a unit fraction by a whole number and a whole number by a unit fraction (a–c), but not fraction by fraction.
Measurement and Data (MD)
- 5.MD.A.1 Convert between units within one measurement system and use conversions in multi-step real problems.
- 5.MD.B.2 Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and use fraction operations to solve problems from them.
- 5.MD.C.3 Know volume as an attribute of solids (a: a unit cube is one cubic unit; b: a solid packed with n cubes has volume n).
- 5.MD.C.4 Measure volume by counting unit cubes in cubic cm, in, ft or improvised units.
- 5.MD.C.5 Link volume to multiplication and addition (a: packing prisms; b: V = l × w × h and V = B × h; c: adding volumes of joined prisms).
Geometry (G)
- 5.G.A.1 Use perpendicular axes to set up a coordinate system and plot and name first-quadrant points.
- 5.G.A.2 Graph first-quadrant points to represent problems and interpret the coordinates in context.
- 5.G.B.3 Know attributes of a category of 2D figures also belong to all its subcategories.
- 5.G.B.4 Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy by their properties.
