The standards (our summaries)

Iowa's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)

  • 4.OA.A.1 Read a multiplication equation as a comparison (times as many) and write such comparisons as equations.
  • 4.OA.A.2 Solve word problems involving multiplicative comparison with multiplication or division, telling them apart from additive comparison.
  • 4.OA.A.3 Solve multistep whole-number word problems with all four operations, make sense of remainders and check with estimation.
  • 4.OA.B.4 Find factor pairs for whole numbers 1–100, recognize multiples, and decide whether a number is prime or composite.
  • 4.OA.C.5 Make a number pattern from a given rule and spot features of the pattern that the rule does not state, explaining why they occur.

Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)

  • 4.NBT.A.1 See that in whole numbers each place is worth ten times the place to its right.
  • 4.NBT.A.2 Read and write multi-digit numbers in standard, word and expanded form and compare them with >, = and <.
  • 4.NBT.A.3 Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place using place value.
  • 4.NBT.B.4 Fluently add and subtract whole numbers to 1,000,000 with an algorithm.
  • 4.NBT.B.5 Multiply up to a four-digit number by a one-digit number and two two-digit numbers, shown with equations, arrays or area models.
  • 4.NBT.B.6 Divide up to four-digit dividends by one-digit divisors, finding quotients and remainders and showing the method with models.

Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)

  • 4.NF.A.1 Use models to show why fractions are equal and make equal fractions, with denominators such as 2–6, 8, 10, 12 and 100.
  • 4.NF.A.2 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators, the benchmark 1/2 or models, and justify.
  • 4.NF.B.3 See a fraction as a sum of unit fractions (a–d: add and subtract parts of one whole, decompose in more than one way, mixed numbers, word problems).
  • 4.NF.B.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number (a–c: as multiples of a unit fraction, multiplying the numerator, word problems).
  • 4.NF.C.5 Write a fraction in tenths as an equivalent fraction in hundredths and add tenths and hundredths together.
  • 4.NF.C.6 Write fractions with denominator 10 or 100 as decimals and place decimals on a number line.
  • 4.NF.C.7 Compare two decimals to hundredths with >, = and <, and justify the comparison with models or a number line.

Measurement and Data (MD)

  • 4.MD.A.1 Know the relative sizes of units in one measurement system and convert from a larger unit to a smaller one.
  • 4.MD.A.2 Solve word problems about distance, time, liquid volume, mass and money with all four operations, including simple fractions and decimals.
  • 4.MD.A.3 Apply rectangle area and perimeter formulas to real and math problems, including a missing side.
  • 4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve fraction problems using it.
  • 4.MD.C.5 Understand angles as measured against a circle (a: one degree is 1/360 of a turn; b: n one-degree angles make n degrees).
  • 4.MD.C.6 Measure and sketch whole-number angles from 1° to 180° using a protractor.
  • 4.MD.C.7 Understand that angle measures add together and find unknown angles in diagrams using equations.

Geometry (G)

  • 4.G.A.1 Draw and identify points, lines, segments, rays, acute, right and obtuse angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.
  • 4.G.A.2 Sort 2D figures by parallel or perpendicular lines and by angle size, and identify right triangles.
  • 4.G.A.3 Recognize and draw lines of symmetry in two-dimensional figures.
