The standards (our summaries)
Iowa's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Operations and Algebraic Thinking (OA)
- 3.OA.A.1 Interpret a product of whole numbers as a number of equal groups (5 × 7 as 5 groups of 7) and describe a matching context.
- 3.OA.A.2 Interpret a whole-number quotient as the number of groups or the size of each group in an equal-sharing situation.
- 3.OA.A.3 Solve multiplication and division word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measures, with the unknown in any position.
- 3.OA.A.4 Use a symbol for the unknown to write equations for word problems and find the missing whole number in a three-number equation.
- 3.OA.B.5 Use the commutative, associative and distributive properties as strategies for multiplying and dividing.
- 3.OA.B.6 Understand division as a missing-factor problem, e.g. 32 ÷ 8 as the number that times 8 makes 32.
- 3.OA.C.7 Multiply and divide within 100 fluently using strategies; by the end of the year know all one-digit products from memory.
- 3.OA.D.8 Solve two-step word problems with all four operations using letter equations and check answers with mental math and rounding.
- 3.OA.D.9 Find patterns in arithmetic, including in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them with properties of operations.
Number and Operations in Base Ten (NBT)
Number and Operations – Fractions (NF)
- 3.NF.A.1 Understand 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a parts of size 1/b (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8).
- 3.NF.A.2 Place fractions on a number line (a: split 0 to 1 into b parts to find 1/b; b: count a lengths of 1/b to find a/b).
- 3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalent fractions and compare fractions (a–d: same size or point, simple equivalents, whole numbers as fractions, same numerator or denominator).
Measurement and Data (MD)
- 3.MD.A.1 Read and record time to the minute, measure minutes and solve elapsed-time problems, e.g. with a number line.
- 3.MD.A.2 Measure and estimate liquid volume and mass in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step word problems with them.
- 3.MD.B.3 Make scaled picture and bar graphs and answer one- and two-step questions comparing category sizes.
- 3.MD.B.4 Measure lengths to the nearest half and quarter inch and show the data on a line plot.
- 3.MD.C.5 Understand area (a: a unit square has one square unit of area; b: a shape covered by n unit squares has area n).
- 3.MD.C.6 Measure area by counting unit squares in square cm, m, in, ft or improvised units.
- 3.MD.C.7 Link area to multiplication and addition (a–d: tiling rectangles, real problems, the distributive property, adding areas of non-overlapping rectangles).
- 3.MD.D.8 Solve perimeter problems, including a missing side, and show rectangles with the same perimeter but different areas or the reverse.
