The standards (our summaries)
Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Grade 6
Number Sense (NS)
- 6.NS.1 Use positive and negative numbers for real-world quantities and explain what zero means in each context.
- 6.NS.2 Understand opposite signs as locations on opposite sides of zero and that the opposite of the opposite is the number itself.
- 6.NS.3 Compare, order and plot rational numbers on a number line and explain order statements in real-world contexts.
- 6.NS.7 Summary being checked: read this one in the official document.
- 6.NS.4 Solve real-world problems with positive fractions and decimals using one or two operations.
- 6.NS.5 Use order of operations and properties to evaluate expressions with nonnegative rational numbers, grouping symbols and whole-number exponents.
- 6.NS.6 Find the GCF of whole numbers to 100 and the LCM of numbers to 12; use the distributive property to factor out a common factor.
- 6.NS.7 Use properties of operations to write equivalent linear expressions and justify that two expressions are equivalent. (being checked)
- 6.NS.8 Evaluate positive rational numbers raised to whole-number exponents.
Ratios and Proportional Reasoning (RP)
- 6.RP.1 Convert between fractions, decimals and percents for positive rational numbers without a calculator.
- 6.RP.2 Understand unit rates and use rate language to describe ratio relationships.
- 6.RP.3 Make tables of equivalent ratios, find missing values and plot the pairs on the coordinate plane.
- 6.RP.4 Solve ratio and rate problems with tables, tape diagrams, double number lines or equations.
- 6.RP.5 Use variables for two quantities in a proportional relationship, write an equation, and link it to graphs and tables.
Algebra and Functions (AF)
- 6.AF.1 Define variables to write expressions for problems and evaluate expressions for given values.
- 6.AF.2 Use substitution to decide which values from a set make an equation or inequality true.
- 6.AF.3 Solve one-step equations (x + p = q, x − p = q, px = q, x/p = q) with nonnegative rational numbers and use them to model problems.
- 6.AF.4 Write inequalities with >, <, ≥ or ≤ and rational constants, and graph their solutions.
- 6.AF.5 Graph points with rational coordinates and use coordinates and absolute value to find distances.
Geometry and Measurement (GM)
- 6.GM.1 Convert between customary and metric units using given conversion factors in real-world problems.
- 6.GM.2 Use the angle sums of triangles and quadrilaterals to solve problems.
- 6.GM.3 Find areas of composite polygon shapes by composing or decomposing them into simpler shapes.
- 6.GM.4 Find the volume of right rectangular prisms with fractional edges using unit-fraction cubes and V = lwh or V = Bh.
Data Analysis and Statistics (DS)
- 6.DS.1 Choose, make and interpret graphs of numerical data such as line plots, histograms and box plots.
- 6.DS.2 Pose statistical questions, collect and organize data, and display and interpret it in graphs.
- 6.DS.3 Summarize numerical data in context: number of observations, center, spread, patterns and how measures relate to shape.
Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)
Process Standards (PS)
- PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
- PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
- PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
- PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
- PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
- PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
- PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
- PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
