The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 5

Number Sense (NS)

  • 5.NS.1 Compare and order fractions, mixed numbers and decimals to thousandths on a number line; record with >, = and <.
  • 5.NS.2 Explain the meanings of a fraction: part of a whole, part of a group, and division of whole numbers.
  • 5.NS.3 See how multiplying or dividing by powers of ten moves zeros and the decimal point; write powers of ten with exponents.
  • 5.NS.4 Model percents as parts of 100 with pictures or diagrams and give the matching fraction.

Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)

  • 5.CA.1 Divide up to four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors, finding quotients and remainders, and justify the method.
  • 5.CA.2 Solve real-world whole-number multiplication and division problems with equations and interpret any remainder.
  • 5.CA.3 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators using flexible strategies or the standard method.
  • 5.CA.4 Solve real-world fraction addition and subtraction problems with models and equations; check with benchmark fractions.
  • 5.CA.5 Multiply a fraction by a whole number or another fraction using visual fraction models.
  • 5.CA.6 Divide fractions by whole numbers or by fractions using visual models and numerical methods.
  • 5.CA.7 Solve real-world problems that multiply fractions and mixed numbers using models and equations.
  • 5.CA.8 Solve real-world problems that divide fractions and mixed numbers using models and equations.
  • 5.CA.9 Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals to hundredths with models, place value or properties, and explain.
  • 5.CA.10 Solve real-world problems with decimals to hundredths, including money, using equations, models or place value.
  • 5.CA.11 Graph real-world ordered pairs in the first quadrant and explain what the coordinates mean in context.

Geometry (G)

  • 5.G.1 Identify and draw right, acute and obtuse triangles and circles with tools; model how radius and diameter relate.

Measurement (M)

  • 5.M.1 Convert between units within one measurement system and use conversions in multi-step real-world problems.
  • 5.M.2 Find the area of rectangles with fractional sides by tiling with unit-fraction squares and by multiplying sides.
  • 5.M.3 Develop and use area formulas for triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids; solve perimeter and area problems with units.
  • 5.M.4 Find the volume of right rectangular prisms by packing unit cubes and relate it to length × width × height or base × height.
  • 5.M.5 Use volume formulas for right rectangular prisms with whole-number edges to solve problems.

Data Analysis (DA)

  • 5.DA.1 Ask questions answered by categorical or numerical data, predict, then collect and graph data (e.g. fraction line plots, histograms).
  • 5.DA.2 Find the mean, median and mode of a data set and decide which best describes it.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
