The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 4

Number Sense (NS)

  • 4.NS.1 Read, write and represent whole numbers to 1,000,000 in words, models, standard and expanded form.
  • 4.NS.2 Use number lines and area models to show mixed numbers, improper fractions and whole numbers as fractions.
  • 4.NS.3 Use fraction models to show and generate equivalent fractions: parts change in number and size but the amount stays the same.
  • 4.NS.4 Compare fractions with different numerators and denominators using common denominators, numerators or benchmarks; justify.
  • 4.NS.5 Write tenths and hundredths as fractions and decimals, model decimals, and convert halves and fourths mentally.
  • 4.NS.6 Compare decimals to hundredths by reasoning about size, record with symbols and justify with a visual model.
  • 4.NS.7 Round multi-digit whole numbers to any place using place value.

Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)

  • 4.CA.1 Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits using place value and properties; explain the strategy.
  • 4.CA.2 Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit divisors, finding quotients and remainders with place value strategies; explain.
  • 4.CA.3 Show that order and grouping of factors do not change the product and explore the distributive property.
  • 4.CA.4 Explore factors and multiples and list all factors and multiples of whole numbers up to 100.
  • 4.CA.5 Solve real-world multiplicative comparison problems with drawings and equations, telling them apart from additive comparison.
  • 4.CA.6 Add and subtract fractions with like denominators using models and decompose fractions into sums of unit fractions.
  • 4.CA.7 Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators by using equivalent fractions or properties of operations.
  • 4.CA.8 Solve real-world addition and subtraction problems with like-denominator fractions using models and equations.
  • 4.CA.9 Describe how terms in a pattern relate so the next term can be found, and generate patterns from a given rule.

Geometry (G)

  • 4.G.1 Identify, describe and draw parallelograms, rhombuses and trapezoids with rulers, straightedges or technology.
  • 4.G.2 Identify and draw rays, right, acute and obtuse angles, and parallel and perpendicular lines, and find them in 2D shapes.
  • 4.G.3 Classify triangles and quadrilaterals by parallel or perpendicular sides and by right, acute or obtuse angles.

Measurement (M)

  • 4.M.1 Measure length to the nearest quarter inch, eighth inch or millimeter.
  • 4.M.2 Convert from larger to smaller units in metric, customary and time measures and use conversions to solve problems.
  • 4.M.3 Use all four operations to solve problems about distance, time, volume, mass and money, including simple fractions.
  • 4.M.4 Use area and perimeter formulas for rectangles; find areas of composite shapes by splitting them into rectangles.

Data Analysis (DA)

  • 4.DA.1 Ask data questions, collect and organize data, graph it in line plots, bar graphs and frequency tables, and interpret it.
  • 4.DA.2 Make line plots of measurements in halves, fourths and eighths and solve fraction problems using them.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
