The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 3

Number Sense (NS)

  • 3.NS.1 Read and write whole numbers to 10,000 in words, models, standard and expanded form, showing equivalent forms.
  • 3.NS.2 Understand unit fractions as one equal part of a whole and other fractions as multiples of unit fractions (denominators 2, 3, 4, 6, 8).
  • 3.NS.3 Locate a fraction on a number line by marking equal unit-fraction lengths from zero.
  • 3.NS.4 Use fraction models to show and generate simple equivalent fractions, seeing that the value stays the same.
  • 3.NS.5 Compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator by reasoning about their size; record with symbols and justify.
  • 3.NS.6 Round two- and three-digit whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred using place value.

Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)

  • 3.CA.1 Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently using place value strategies, algorithms and properties of operations.
  • 3.CA.2 Solve real-world multi-digit addition and subtraction problems using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown.
  • 3.CA.3 Model multiplication as equal groups, arrays, area models and equal jumps on a number line; show the properties of 0 and 1.
  • 3.CA.4 Model division as sharing, partitioning and the inverse of multiplication; show how 0 and 1 behave in division.
  • 3.CA.5 Multiply and divide within 100 using strategies such as fact families and properties of operations.
  • 3.CA.6 Know multiplication facts from 0 to 10 and the related division facts fluently.
  • 3.CA.7 Solve real-world multiplication and division problems within 100 (equal groups, arrays, measures) with drawings and equations.
  • 3.CA.8 Make, extend and state a rule for number patterns within 100, including patterns in addition and multiplication tables.

Geometry (G)

  • 3.G.1 Recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares as quadrilaterals and draw examples and non-examples.
  • 3.G.2 Draw and name points, lines and line segments with rulers or digital tools and use these terms to describe 2D shapes.
  • 3.G.3 Split shapes into parts of equal area and name each part as a unit fraction (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, 1/8).

Measurement (M)

  • 3.M.1 Estimate and measure mass (g, kg) and volume (quarts, gallons, liters); solve one-step problems in the same unit.
  • 3.M.2 Choose units and tools to measure length to the nearest quarter inch, weight in pounds and temperature in °C and °F.
  • 3.M.3 Tell time to the nearest minute, measure elapsed time in minutes and solve time-interval word problems.
  • 3.M.4 Count coins and bills; write money amounts with ¢ or $ and decide whether there is enough money to buy items.
  • 3.M.5 Find the area of rectangles with unit squares and by multiplying sides; draw rectangles with equal perimeter but different area, or the reverse.
  • 3.M.6 Find the perimeter of polygons from side lengths, including when one side length is unknown.

Data Analysis (DA)

  • 3.DA.1 Organize data from observations, surveys or experiments in scaled bar graphs and pictographs and solve problems using them.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
