The standards (our summaries)
Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Grade 2
Number Sense (NS)
- 2.NS.1 Count by ones, twos, fives, tens and hundreds from any number, up to at least 1,000.
- 2.NS.2 Read and write whole numbers to 1,000 in words, models, standard and expanded form, showing equivalent forms.
- 2.NS.3 Decide if a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even, e.g. by pairing objects or counting by twos.
- 2.NS.4 Understand 100 as ten tens and model three-digit numbers, multiples of 100 and equivalent forms with objects and drawings.
- 2.NS.5 Compare two three-digit numbers using hundreds, tens and ones, recording results with >, = and <.
Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)
- 2.CA.1 Solve real-world addition and subtraction problems within 100 with the unknown in any position; check sums by estimating.
- 2.CA.2 Add and subtract within 1,000 using place value, properties and inverse operations, including regrouping; explain strategies.
- 2.CA.3 Show that changing the order or grouping of addends does not change the sum.
- 2.CA.4 Make, extend and state a rule for addition and subtraction number patterns within 1,000.
Geometry (G)
- 2.G.1 Identify, describe and sort 2D and 3D shapes (including right rectangular prisms) by faces, sides and vertices; draw 2D shapes.
- 2.G.2 Explore and predict how putting together and taking apart 2D and 3D shapes changes them.
- 2.G.3 Split a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares and count to find the total.
- 2.G.4 Split circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal shares (halves, thirds, fourths); equal shares need not look the same.
Measurement (M)
- 2.M.1 Explain how inches, feet and yards relate, and how centimeters relate to meters.
- 2.M.2 Estimate and measure lengths with rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks and tapes to the nearest inch, foot, yard, centimeter or meter.
- 2.M.3 Estimate and measure capacity in cups and pints; add and subtract capacities in the same unit to solve real problems.
- 2.M.4 Tell time to the nearest five minutes with a.m./p.m. and solve elapsed-time problems on the hour or half hour.
- 2.M.5 Explain time relationships: seconds in a minute, minutes in an hour, hours in a day, and days, weeks and months in a year.
- 2.M.6 Find the total value of a set of pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars.
Data Analysis (DA)
- 2.DA.1 Collect and graph data in scaled bar graphs and pictographs (scales of 2, 5, 10 or 100) and answer questions using the data.
Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)
Process Standards (PS)
- PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
- PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
- PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
- PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
- PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
- PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
- PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
- PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
