The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Grade 1

Number Sense (NS)

  • 1.NS.1 Count forward by ones, fives and tens to at least 120, reading and writing numerals and showing quantities.
  • 1.NS.2 Show place value for two-digit numbers (tens and ones) and equivalent forms of whole numbers with objects and drawings.
  • 1.NS.3 Match ordinal words (first, third…) to positions in an ordered group of up to 20 objects.
  • 1.NS.4 Compare two-digit numbers using tens and ones, recording results with >, = and < symbols.

Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)

  • 1.CA.1 Add and subtract fluently within 20 using strategies such as counting on or making ten; understand zero and the equal sign.
  • 1.CA.2 Solve word problems within 20 (joining, separating, comparing) with unknowns in any position, using models or equations.
  • 1.CA.3 Add within 100 with place value strategies (two-digit plus one-digit or plus a multiple of ten) and explain reasoning.
  • 1.CA.4 Make, extend and state the rule for addition number patterns within 100.

Geometry (G)

  • 1.G.1 Tell defining from non-defining attributes of 2D and 3D shapes and draw 2D shapes showing their key features.
  • 1.G.2 Put 2D or 3D shapes together to make a composite shape, then make new shapes from it.
  • 1.G.3 Split circles and rectangles into two or four equal parts, name halves, fourths and quarters, and see more parts are smaller.

Measurement (M)

  • 1.M.1 Compare and order objects by length, area, capacity, weight or temperature, directly or with a non-standard unit.
  • 1.M.2 Tell and write time to the half hour on analog clocks, link times to events and explain reading digital clocks.
  • 1.M.3 Identify the values of pennies, nickels and dimes and of small collections of these coins.

Data Analysis (DA)

  • 1.DA.1 With guidance, collect survey data, organize it in bar graphs, pictographs or tables, and draw conclusions.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
