The standards (our summaries)

Indiana's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Number Sense (NS)

  • K.NS.1 Count to at least 100 by ones and tens from any number; name the number one or ten more or less.
  • K.NS.2 Write numerals 0–20, match a numeral to a set (0 for none) and recognize number words to ten.
  • K.NS.3 Count objects one-to-one in order, know the last number said is the total, and count out sets up to 20.
  • K.NS.4 Recognize small groups of 1–10 objects in patterned arrangements and say how many without counting.
  • K.NS.5 Decide whether one group has more, fewer or the same number of objects as another by matching or counting.
  • K.NS.6 Compare two written numerals from 1 to 20 to tell which is greater or less.
  • K.NS.7 Understand a ten as ten ones and show numbers 10–20 as tens and ones with objects and drawings.

Computation and Algebraic Thinking (CA)

  • K.CA.1 Solve real-world addition and subtraction problems within 10 by modeling with objects or drawings.
  • K.CA.2 Break numbers below 10 into pairs in more than one way and record each split with an equation.
  • K.CA.3 For any number 1–9, find the number that makes 10 and record it with a drawing or equation.
  • K.CA.4 Make, extend and describe the rule for simple repeating and growing patterns with numbers and shapes.

Geometry (G)

  • K.G.1 Compare 2D and 3D shapes of different sizes and orientations, using everyday words for sides, corners and other features.

Measurement (M)

  • K.M.1 Compare objects directly by length, capacity, weight and temperature using words such as shorter, lighter, warmer.
  • K.M.2 Use everyday time words (today, month) and explain how calendars and clocks help us track time.

Data Analysis (DA)

  • K.DA.1 With support, sort data into simple bar graphs, pictographs or tables and use them to spot patterns and compare.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
