Geometry
Geometry Foundations (GF)
- G.GF.1 Describe how an axiomatic system is built and explain how evidence, counterexamples and proofs differ.
- G.GF.2 Write and judge the truth of the converse, inverse and contrapositive of conditional and biconditional statements.
- G.GF.3 Write geometric proofs, including coordinate proofs, as two-column, paragraph or flowchart proofs.
- G.GF.4 Prove and apply theorems about parallel and perpendicular lines, transversals, vertical angles and perpendicular bisectors.
- G.GF.5 Use slopes from graphs and equations to decide whether lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither.
- G.GF.6 Use tools to make and justify constructions: congruent segments and angles, bisectors, altitudes, medians, parallel lines.
- G.GF.7 Derive the distance formula from the Pythagorean Theorem and find lengths and midpoints of segments on the coordinate plane.
Triangles (T)
- G.T.1 Prove and apply triangle theorems: angle sum, isosceles, Pythagorean, midsegment, proportional sides, angle bisector, inequalities, hinge.
- G.T.2 Prove and apply triangle congruence (ASA, SAS, AAS, SSS, HL) from the rigid-motion definition of congruence.
- G.T.3 Use similarity transformations to decide whether triangles are similar and explore what similarity means.
- G.T.4 Use congruent and similar triangles to solve problems about sides, perimeters and areas.
- G.T.5 Understand that side ratios in right triangles depend only on the acute angles, which defines the trig ratios.
- G.T.6 Solve right-triangle problems with sine, cosine, tangent, their inverses and the Pythagorean Theorem.
- G.T.7 Use the side relationships in 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 triangles to solve problems.
Quadrilaterals & Other Polygons (QP)
- G.QP.1 Prove and apply theorems about the sides, angles and diagonals of parallelograms.
- G.QP.2 Prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram, rhombus, rectangle, square, kite or trapezoid, including with coordinates.
- G.QP.3 Develop and use formulas for interior and exterior angles of polygons.
- G.QP.4 Find perimeters and areas of regular and irregular polygons to solve problems.
Circles (CI)
- G.CI.1 Define and use circle vocabulary: radius, diameter, arc, arc measure, chord, secant, tangent, congruent and concentric circles.
- G.CI.2 Explore relationships among central, inscribed and circumscribed angles, radii and chords, including radius ⟂ tangent.
- G.CI.3 Solve problems involving circumference, area of circles and sectors, arc length and related angles.
Transformations & Three-Dimensional Solids (TS)
- G.TS.1 Use rigid motions to transform figures, predict results of translations, reflections and rotations, and show congruence.
- G.TS.2 Verify properties of dilations (center, scale factor) and how dilated segment lengths change.
- G.TS.3 Explore congruent and similar solids (prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, spheres) and use their properties.
- G.TS.4 Solve volume and surface area problems for prisms, cylinders, cones, spheres, pyramids and composite solids.
- G.TS.5 Use geometric methods to solve design problems.
Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)
Process Standards (PS)
- PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
- PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
- PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
- PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
- PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
- PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
- PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
- PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
