Algebra II

Arithmetic and Structure of Expressions, Equations, and Functions (ASE)

  • AII.ASE.1 Explain how integer exponent rules extend to rational exponents so radicals can be written as rational powers.
  • AII.ASE.2 Rewrite rational expressions with exponent rules and factoring to show structure, and add, subtract, multiply and divide them.
  • AII.ASE.3 Solve systems in two variables that mix linear and nonlinear equations, algebraically and graphically.
  • AII.ASE.4 Solve exponential and logarithmic equations in one variable.

Function Families (FF)

  • AII.FF.1 Use technology to connect equations and graphs of quadratic, polynomial, square root, rational, exponential, log, piecewise and absolute value functions.
  • AII.FF.2 Graph function families, describe intercepts, domain, range, asymptotes, symmetry and end behavior, find inverses and model situations.
  • AII.FF.3 Rewrite functions in equivalent forms to reveal key features and connect them to real contexts.
  • AII.FF.4 Apply function families to real problems, including science and economics.

Modeling with Functions and Data (MFD)

  • AII.MFD.1 Define functions and inverses, show them algebraically and graphically, and identify situations functions can model.
  • AII.MFD.2 Represent real problems with linear, quadratic, exponential or rational functions in tables, graphs and equations and interpret them.
  • AII.MFD.3 Fit linear, quadratic or exponential models to bivariate data with technology, predict, interpret correlation and choose the best fit.
  • AII.MFD.4 Explore with technology how adding k, multiplying by k or changing the input transforms graphs of different functions.

Modeling with Advanced Algebra (MAA)

  • AII.MAA.1 Solve real problems with quadratic, polynomial and rational functions (completing the square, factoring, number of solutions, extraneous roots).
  • AII.MAA.2 Model and solve real systems of linear equations and inequalities in two or three variables and judge the solutions.
  • AII.MAA.3 Model real-world situations with linear programming and matrices.

Modeling with Data and Statistics (MDS)

  • AII.MDS.1 Tell random from non-random sampling, reduce bias, evaluate surveys and experiments, design data collection and make inferences.
  • AII.MDS.2 Compare simulation results with a theoretical model and use the law of large numbers to relate them.
  • AII.MDS.3 Use predictive modeling, linear algebra and conditional probability to analyze data and evaluate claims.

Modeling with Quantities (MQ)

  • AII.MQ.1 Model probability situations with permutations, combinations and the Fundamental Counting Principle.

Mathematics Process Standards (all grades)

Process Standards (PS)

  • PS.1 Make sense of problems, plan a solution path, monitor progress and check that answers are reasonable.
  • PS.2 Reason abstractly and quantitatively, moving between symbols and the real context while attending to units.
  • PS.3 Build and justify arguments (including always/sometimes/never), critique others' reasoning and collaborate.
  • PS.4 Model with mathematics: apply math to everyday situations, make reasonable assumptions and check results.
  • PS.5 Choose and use suitable tools, from paper and models to technology, knowing their strengths and limits.
  • PS.6 Attend to precision: communicate with clear definitions, correct symbols, labeled units and suitable accuracy.
  • PS.7 Look for and use structure and patterns, seeing complex items as single objects or as sets of parts.
  • PS.8 Notice repeated reasoning, look for general methods and shortcuts, and keep checking intermediate results.
