The standards (our summaries)
Georgia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Mathematical Practices (MP)
- 8.MP Keep going with problems, reason, work with others, explain thinking, use feedback and set learning goals.
Numerical Reasoning (NR)
- 8.NR.1 Solve real problems with irrational numbers and their rational approximations.
- 8.NR.2 Solve problems with radicals and integer exponents and use scientific notation for real quantities.
- 8.NR.2.1 Use the properties of integer exponents to write equivalent numerical expressions.
- 8.NR.2.2 Use square root and cube root symbols for solutions to equations, including positive and negative roots.
- 8.NR.2.3 Estimate very large or small quantities in scientific notation and compare how many times bigger.
- 8.NR.2.4 Calculate with numbers in scientific notation and read notation produced by technology.
Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR)
- 8.PAR.3 Write and interpret expressions in context and write and solve one-variable linear equations and inequalities.
- 8.PAR.3.1 Interpret the parts of expressions and formulas with several terms or factors in context.
- 8.PAR.3.2 Decide whether a linear equation in one variable has one, infinitely many or no solutions.
- 8.PAR.3.3 Write and solve linear equations and inequalities from real problems.
- 8.PAR.3.4 Justify each step in solving a linear equation or inequality using properties.
- 8.PAR.3.5 Solve linear equations and inequalities with letter coefficients and explain results in context.
- 8.PAR.3.6 Rearrange linear and literal equations fluently to isolate a quantity and interpret the result.
- 8.PAR.4 Connect proportional and non-proportional relationships, lines and equations, and read graphs as models.
Functional & Graphical Reasoning (FGR)
- 8.FGR.5 Define, evaluate and compare functions and use them to model real situations.
- 8.FGR.5.1 Explain that a function gives exactly one output for each input and that its graph is a set of ordered pairs.
- 8.FGR.5.2 Recognize linear and nonlinear functions in real situations and sketch and interpret their graphs.
- 8.FGR.5.3 Relate the domain of a linear function to its graph and the quantity it describes.
- 8.FGR.5.4 Compare the rate of change and starting value of two functions shown in different ways.
- 8.FGR.5.5 Write and explain slope-intercept, standard and point-slope forms of a linear equation.
- 8.FGR.5.6 Rewrite a linear function in equivalent forms to show its properties in context.
- 8.FGR.5.7 Build a linear function from a relationship by finding its rate of change and starting value.
- 8.FGR.5.8 Explain the rate of change and starting value in terms of the situation, graph or table.
- 8.FGR.5.9 Graph and analyze linear functions in different forms, finding slope and intercepts.
- 8.FGR.6 Solve real problems involving linear patterns in two-variable (bivariate) data.
- 8.FGR.6.1 Fit a line to scatter plots that show a linear pattern and judge how closely the data follow it.
- 8.FGR.6.2 Use the equation of a linear model to solve problems and interpret its slope and intercept.
- 8.FGR.6.3 Explain the slope and intercept of a fitted model in context, knowing predictions are not certain.
- 8.FGR.6.4 Use graphs with a line of best fit to draw informal conclusions about a statistical question.
- 8.FGR.7 Justify and use several methods to solve systems of linear equations that model real situations.
- 8.FGR.7.1 Interpret and solve problems that lead to two linear equations in two variables.
- 8.FGR.7.2 Explain that the solution of a system is where the graphs meet because it satisfies both equations.
- 8.FGR.7.3 Estimate solutions of systems by graphing and solve simple cases by inspection.
- 8.FGR.7.4 Solve two-variable linear systems exactly by substitution and elimination.
- 8.FGR.7.5 Write and compare equations of parallel, perpendicular and other lines and explain consistency.
Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR)
- 8.GSR.8 Use the Pythagorean Theorem and volume to solve geometry problems about real situations. (being checked)
