The standards (our summaries)

Georgia's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Mathematical Practices (MP)

  • 5.MP Keep going with problems, reason, work with others, explain thinking, use feedback and set learning goals.

Numerical Reasoning (NR)

  • 5.NR.1 Use place value reasoning to solve real problems.
    • 5.NR.1.1 Know that each place is ten times the place to its right and one tenth of the place to its left.
    • 5.NR.1.2 Explain how digits shift when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 and write powers up to 10³.
  • 5.NR.2 Multiply and divide multi-digit whole numbers to solve problems.
    • 5.NR.2.1 Multiply up to three-digit by two-digit whole numbers fluently in context.
    • 5.NR.2.2 Divide up to four-digit numbers by two-digit divisors (up to 25), starting with partial quotients.
  • 5.NR.3 Describe fractions and calculate with them using part-whole strategies and models.
    • 5.NR.3.1 Read a fraction as a division of numerator by denominator and solve division with fraction answers.
    • 5.NR.3.2 Compare and order up to three fractions using models, common denominators or benchmarks.
    • 5.NR.3.3 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators.
    • 5.NR.3.4 Multiply a fraction by a whole number, reasoning with equivalence.
    • 5.NR.3.5 Explain whether multiplying by a fraction greater than, less than or equal to 1 makes a number bigger or smaller.
    • 5.NR.3.6 Model and solve dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.
  • 5.NR.4 Read, write and compare decimals to thousandths and round and calculate with decimals to hundredths.
    • 5.NR.4.1 Read and write decimals to thousandths in standard and expanded form.
    • 5.NR.4.2 Compare and order decimals to thousandths using digit values, models and symbols.
    • 5.NR.4.3 Round decimals to the nearest hundredth using place value and visual aids.
    • 5.NR.4.4 Add and subtract decimals to hundredths with different strategies and explain them.
  • 5.NR.5 Write, interpret and evaluate numerical expressions in real situations.
    • 5.NR.5.1 Write, interpret and evaluate simple whole-number expressions that use grouping symbols.

Patterning & Algebraic Reasoning (PAR)

  • 5.PAR.6 Make and analyze number patterns from given rules.
    • 5.PAR.6.1 Make two number patterns from two rules and compare their terms in a table.
    • 5.PAR.6.2 Plot ordered pairs in the first quadrant and explain what the coordinates mean.

Measurement & Data Reasoning (MDR)

  • 5.MDR.7 Solve measurement and time problems and use graphs to answer questions.
    • 5.MDR.7.1 Solve real problems with distance, mass, weight, volume and time in customary and metric units.
    • 5.MDR.7.2 Ask and answer everyday questions using collected data and suitable graphs.
    • 5.MDR.7.3 Convert between metric units and use the conversions in multi-step problems.
    • 5.MDR.7.4 Convert between customary units and use the conversions in multi-step problems.

Geometric & Spatial Reasoning (GSR)

  • 5.GSR.8 Study polygons and rectangular prisms, classify polygons and find the volume of right rectangular prisms.
    • 5.GSR.8.1 Classify, compare and contrast polygons by angles, sides, symmetry and parallel or perpendicular lines.
    • 5.GSR.8.2 Show that properties of a category of shapes belong to all its subcategories.
    • 5.GSR.8.3 Explore volume by filling right rectangular prisms with unit cubes, leaving no gaps or overlaps.
    • 5.GSR.8.4 Discover that the volume of a right rectangular prism is base area times height.
