The standards (our summaries)

Colorado's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Standard 1: Number and Quantity

  • MA.3.NBT.A Use place value and properties of operations for multi-digit arithmetic.
    • 1. Use place value to round whole numbers to the nearest ten or hundred.
    • 2. Add and subtract within 1000 fluently using place-value strategies and algorithms.
    • 3. Multiply one-digit numbers by multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 using place value and properties of operations.
  • MA.3.NF.A Understand fractions as numbers.
    • 1. Understand 1/b as one of b equal parts of a whole and a/b as a such parts.
    • 2. Understand fractions as numbers and show them on a number line.
    • 2.a. Place 1/b on a number line by splitting 0 to 1 into b equal parts.
    • 2.b. Place a/b on a number line by marking off a lengths of 1/b from 0.
    • 3. Explain equivalent fractions in simple cases and compare fractions by reasoning about size.
    • 3.a. Know two fractions are equivalent if they are the same size or at the same point on a number line.
    • 3.b. Recognize and make simple equivalent fractions and explain why they are equal, e.g. with a model.
    • 3.c. Write whole numbers as fractions and spot fractions equal to whole numbers (e.g. 3 = 3/1, 4/4 = 1).
    • 3.d. Compare fractions that share a numerator or a denominator, for the same whole, and record with >, = or <.

Standard 2: Algebra and Functions

  • MA.3.OA.A Represent and solve multiplication and division problems.
    • 1. Interpret a product such as 5 × 7 as the total in 5 equal groups of 7, and describe situations that match.
    • 2. Interpret a quotient such as 56 ÷ 8 as the size of each share or as the number of equal shares.
    • 3. Solve multiplication and division word problems within 100 about equal groups, arrays and measurements, using drawings and equations.
    • 4. Work out the missing number in a multiply or divide equation such as 8 × ? = 48.
  • MA.3.OA.B Use properties of multiplication and link it to division.
    • 1. Use properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive) as strategies to multiply and divide.
    • 2. See division as finding an unknown factor (e.g. 32 ÷ 8 by asking what times 8 makes 32).
  • MA.3.OA.C Multiply and divide within 100.
    • 1. Multiply and divide within 100 fluently and know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 3.
  • MA.3.OA.D Solve problems with all four operations and explain number patterns.
    • 1. Solve two-step word problems with all four operations, write equations with a letter for the unknown and check answers by estimating.
    • 2. Find patterns in arithmetic, such as in addition and multiplication tables, and explain them using properties of operations.

Standard 3: Data, Statistics, and Probability

  • MA.3.MD.A Solve measurement and estimation problems with time, volume and mass.
    • 1. Tell and write time to the minute and solve word problems adding and subtracting minutes.
    • 2. Measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses in grams, kilograms and liters and solve one-step word problems with them.
  • MA.3.MD.B Show and interpret data.
    • 1. Draw scaled picture and bar graphs and answer one- and two-step "how many more or fewer" questions from them.
    • 2. Measure lengths to the half and quarter inch and show the data on a line plot.
  • MA.3.MD.C Understand area and connect it to multiplication and addition.
    • 1. Recognize area as a property of flat shapes and understand how area is measured.
    • 1.a. A unit square (side 1 unit) has an area of one square unit and is used to measure area.
    • 1.b. A shape covered with no gaps or overlaps by n unit squares has an area of n square units.
    • 2. Measure area by counting unit squares (square cm, m, in, ft or improvised units).
    • 3. Connect area to multiplication and addition.
    • 3.a. Find a rectangle's area by tiling and show it equals the product of the side lengths.
    • 3.b. Multiply side lengths to find rectangle areas in real-world and math problems.
    • 3.c. Use tiling and area models to show the distributive property: a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c.
    • 3.d. Find the area of rectilinear shapes by splitting them into rectangles and adding the areas.
  • MA.3.MD.D Understand and find perimeter.
    • 1. Solve perimeter problems for polygons, including unknown sides and rectangles with equal perimeter but different area, or the reverse.

Standard 4: Geometry

  • MA.3.G.A Reason about shapes and their attributes.
    • 1. Know shapes in different categories can share attributes that define a larger category (quadrilaterals); recognize rhombuses, rectangles and squares and draw other quadrilaterals.
    • 2. Split shapes into equal-area parts and name each part's area as a unit fraction of the whole.
