The standards (our summaries)
Colorado's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.
Standard 1: Number and Quantity
- MA.4.NBT.A Extend place value to multi-digit whole numbers.
- 1. Know that in a whole number a digit is worth ten times what it would be worth one place to the right.
- 2. Read and write multi-digit whole numbers in numerals, words and expanded form and compare them using >, = and <.
- 3. Use place value to round a multi-digit whole number to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand or any other place.
- MA.4.NBT.B Use place value and properties of operations for multi-digit arithmetic.
- 1. Add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers fluently with the standard algorithm.
- 2. Multiply up to four digits by one digit and two digits by two digits with place-value strategies, explained with equations, arrays or area models.
- 3. Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, with remainders, using place-value strategies and explaining with equations, arrays or area models.
- MA.4.NF.A Build understanding of equivalent fractions and ordering fractions.
- MA.4.NF.B Build fractions from unit fractions.
- 1. Understand a fraction a/b (a > 1) as several unit fractions 1/b added together.
- 1.a. See adding and subtracting fractions as joining and separating parts of the same whole.
- 1.b. Break a fraction into a sum of same-denominator fractions in more than one way and justify with models.
- 1.c. Add and subtract mixed numbers that have the same denominator.
- 1.d. Solve word problems adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.
- 2. Extend earlier work on multiplication to multiply fractions by whole numbers.
- 2.a. Understand a/b as a times 1/b (e.g. 5/4 = 5 × 1/4).
- 2.b. Multiply a fraction by a whole number using the idea that n × (a/b) = (n × a)/b.
- 2.c. Solve word problems that multiply a fraction by a whole number.
- MA.4.NF.C Understand decimal notation for fractions and compare decimals.
Standard 2: Algebra and Functions
- MA.4.OA.A Solve problems with the four operations on whole numbers.
- 1. Read 35 = 5 × 7 as a comparison (35 is five times 7) and write comparison statements as equations.
- 2. Solve word problems with multiplicative comparison, telling it apart from additive comparison.
- 3. Solve multistep whole-number word problems with all four operations, interpreting remainders, using letter equations and checking with estimation.
- MA.4.OA.B Get to know factors and multiples.
- 1. Find all factor pairs of a number from 1 to 100, decide if it is a multiple of a one-digit number, and decide if it is prime or composite.
- MA.4.OA.C Generate and analyze patterns.
- 1. Create a number or shape pattern from a rule and spot features of the pattern that the rule does not state.
Standard 3: Data, Statistics, and Probability
- MA.4.MD.A Solve measurement problems, including converting units.
- 1. Know the relative sizes of units in one system (metric length and mass, pounds and ounces, liters, time) and convert larger units to smaller ones.
- 2. Solve word problems with all four operations about distance, time, volume, mass and money, including simple fractions or decimals.
- 3. Use rectangle area and perimeter formulas in real-world and math problems.
- MA.4.MD.B Show and interpret data.
- 1. Make line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths and solve fraction problems from them.
- MA.4.MD.C Understand and measure angles.
- 1. Recognize angles as shapes made by two rays with a shared endpoint and understand how angles are measured.
- 1.a. Measure an angle by the fraction of a circle it turns through; 1/360 of a turn is a one-degree angle.
- 1.b. An angle made of n one-degree turns has a measure of n degrees.
- 2. Measure angles in whole degrees with a protractor and sketch angles of a given size.
- 3. Know angle measures add up when an angle is split, and solve problems to find unknown angles.
Standard 4: Geometry
- MA.4.G.A Draw and identify lines and angles and classify shapes by them.
