The standards (our summaries)

Colorado's official codes with our own short summaries (not the official wording). Each code links to the official document.

Standard 1: Number and Quantity

  • MA.2.NBT.A Understand hundreds, tens and ones.
    • 1. Know that in a three-digit number the digits count hundreds, tens and ones.
    • 1.a. See 100 as one bundle of ten tens, which we call a "hundred".
    • 1.b. Know 100, 200, … 900 mean one to nine hundreds with no tens or ones.
    • 2. Count within 1000 and skip-count by 5s, 10s and 100s.
    • 3. Read and write numbers to 1000 as numerals, in words and in expanded form.
    • 4. Compare two three-digit numbers by place value, recording with >, = and <.
  • MA.2.NBT.B Add and subtract using place value and properties of operations.
    • 1. Add and subtract within 100 fluently using place-value strategies, properties of operations or related facts.
    • 2. Add as many as four two-digit numbers with place-value strategies and properties of operations.
    • 3. Add and subtract within 1000 with models and place-value strategies, link them to a written method, and compose or decompose tens and hundreds.
    • 4. Mentally add or subtract 10 or 100 to or from a number between 100 and 900.
    • 5. Use place value and properties of operations to explain why add and subtract strategies work.

Standard 2: Algebra and Functions

  • MA.2.OA.A Represent and solve addition and subtraction problems.
    • 1. Solve one- and two-step add/subtract word problems within 100 of all types, with the unknown in any position, using drawings and equations.
  • MA.2.OA.B Add and subtract within 20 fluently.
    • 1. Add and subtract within 20 fluently with mental strategies and know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 2.
  • MA.2.OA.C Work with equal groups as a base for multiplication.
    • 1. Decide if a group of up to 20 objects is odd or even; write an even number as a double (e.g. 8 = 4 + 4).
    • 2. Use repeated addition to find the total in a rectangular array of up to 5 by 5 and write the matching equation.

Standard 3: Data, Statistics, and Probability

  • MA.2.MD.A Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.
    • 1. Choose and use length tools (ruler, yardstick, meter stick, tape measure) to measure objects.
    • 2. Measure an object twice with different units and explain how the measurements relate to the unit size.
    • 3. Estimate lengths in inches, feet, centimeters and meters.
    • 4. Find the difference in length between two objects in a standard unit.
  • MA.2.MD.B Connect addition and subtraction to length.
    • 1. Solve add/subtract word problems within 100 about lengths in the same unit, using drawings and equations.
    • 2. Show whole numbers as lengths on a number line and show sums and differences within 100 on it.
  • MA.2.MD.C Work with time and money.
    • 1. Tell and write time to the nearest five minutes on analog and digital clocks, using a.m. and p.m.
    • 2. Solve word problems with bills and coins (quarters, dimes, nickels, pennies) using the $ and ¢ symbols.
  • MA.2.MD.D Show and interpret data.
    • 1. Measure several lengths to the nearest whole unit and show the data on a line plot.
    • 2. Draw picture and bar graphs for up to four categories and solve simple problems using a bar graph.

Standard 4: Geometry

  • MA.2.G.A Reason about shapes and their attributes.
    • 1. Recognize and draw shapes with given attributes and identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons and cubes.
    • 2. Split a rectangle into rows and columns of equal squares and count them.
    • 3. Split circles and rectangles into 2, 3 or 4 equal shares, name them, and see equal shares of the same whole can look different.
