How do you teach note names on the staff?
Teach the lines and spaces separately. In the treble clef the lines from the bottom are E G B D F (“Every Good Boy Does Fine”) and the spaces spell F A C E. In the bass clef the lines are G B D F A and the spaces are A C E G. Then practice with landmark notes such as middle C.
Middle C sits on one ledger line below the treble staff and one ledger line above the bass staff. Start with the easy range (no ledger lines), then add middle C. The step-by-step units Notes in the treble clef and Notes in the bass clef teach each one with sound.
How do you play music bingo in the classroom?
Give each child a different bingo card of music words or instruments. The caller reads a clue, such as “gradually getting louder”, and children cross off the matching word (crescendo). The first to complete a line calls “Bingo!” and reads the words back so the class can check them.
The maker prints a caller’s list in a random order, and the on-screen caller reads one clue at a time on the board. These are the 30 music words and their meanings:
| Word | Clue |
|---|---|
| forte (f) | Play loudly. |
| piano (p) | Play quietly. |
| crescendo | Gradually get louder. |
| diminuendo | Gradually get quieter. |
| allegro | Fast and lively. |
| adagio | Slowly. |
| andante | At a walking pace. |
| staccato | Short and detached. |
| legato | Smooth and joined. |
| pulse | The steady beat you can clap or march to. |
| tempo | The speed of the music. |
| pitch | How high or low a sound is. |
| dynamics | The louds and quiets in music. |
| timbre | The special sound of an instrument or voice. |
| texture | How many layers of sound there are. |
| rhythm | A pattern of long and short sounds. |
| ostinato | A short pattern repeated over and over. |
| melody | The tune. |
| harmony | Different notes sounding together that fit the tune. |
| unison | Everyone playing or singing the same notes together. |
| solo | One performer on their own. |
| duet | Two performers together. |
